Africa-Press – Eswatini. <\/strong><\/span>The country is making great strides in the quest to eliminate R-22 by 2030.<\/b><\/p>\n

According to Home Climate R22 refrigerant, (also known as R-22 freon and HCFC-22 freon) is a chemical used in both air conditioners and heat pumps. In 2020, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) banned the production and import of R22 because of its particularly harmful impact on the ozone layer when released into the air.<\/p>\n

Many countries have followed suit as they have vowed to eliminate R-22 refrigerants, this includes Eswatini.<\/p>\n

This month, the Eswatini Environmental Authority hosted a validation workshop where it informed stakeholders about the strategy to eliminate R-22 by 2030.<\/p>\n

The authority explained that as part of the implementation of the Montreal protocol on substances that deplete the ozone layer, it has through consultation with various stakeholders prepared the Hydrochlorofluorocarbon Phase-out Management Plan Stage II (HPMPII) investment component strategy in the elimination of R-22 refrigerants in all sectors by 2030 in order to maintain the country\u2019s compliance under the Montreal Protocol.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Investment Component is funded by UNDP Eswatini and is looking at identifying the needs for equipment at three training institutions and establishing six refrigerant recovery and recycling centres.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe validation workshop was to inform the stakeholders the strategy to eliminate R-22 by 2030,\u201d a statement from the authority reads.<\/p>\n

Reduction<\/p>\n

According to Eswatini Environment Authority, the country had already achieved a 60 per cent reduction by 2020 which was above the 35 per cent target set by the protocol.<\/p>\n

R-22 refrigerant is one of the most commonly used refrigerants in the air conditioning systems.<\/p>\n

R-22 is the short name for the halocarbon compound CHClF2 (monochlorodifluoromethane), which is used as the refrigerant. R stands for the refrigerant.<\/p>\n
