Africa-Press – Eswatini. <\/strong><\/span>The Kingdom of Eswatini has applauded the TICAD\u2019s support for the country and the continent.<\/b><\/p>\n

His Majesty the King said a whole lot more stood to be achieved by the Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD).<\/p>\n

The King highlighted four key areas requiring support under the existing Japan-Africa relations.<\/p>\n

These are water harvesting, reliable laboratories to enhance food safety, technological skills for research and development, and energy generation projects aimed at meeting the country\u2019s energy self-sufficiency targets.<\/p>\n

His Majesty said, pursuant to the 2030 agenda for sustainable development goals and the Paris Agreement on Climate Change, the government of Eswatini had prioritised the safeguarding of food security and ending hunger. He said efforts have been made to promote sustainable agriculture and create agri-food systems that are more resilient to the current and future impacts of climate change.<\/p>\n

In spite of our best efforts, he said, there are still some initiatives that require collaboration with our international partners.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe mitigation of the effects of the sporadic droughts by promoting water harvesting through communal earth dams, which will increase crop production downstream and increase economic activity in the rural areas is key.<\/p>\n

The feasibility study for the project has been concluded and funding is required,\u201d said the King.<\/p>\n

He added that food safety and public health were critical, which prompted the government to invest in the construction of research, development, and innovation (RDI) facilities, which include reliable laboratories at the Royal Science and Technology Park (RSTP).<\/p>\n

\u201cThese laboratories are a vital component of innovation and food safety systems to help safeguard consumers and enable farmers to improve production practices and sell safe food. The infrastructure for the laboratories has been completed and support is required for the equipment in the laboratories,\u201d said the King. His Majesty praised Japan for its advancement in science and technological skills.<\/p>\n

He called for technical advice and support to help Eswatini operationalise the research and development laboratories. With the country engaged in efforts to improve its power generating capacity, the King invited the business community to invest in energy generation projects to meet our 2025 energy self-sufficiency targets, which are less harmful to the environment.<\/p>\n

He further urged the members of TICAD to come up with economic recovery strategies to overcome the global challenges such as the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, food crisis, climate change and conflicts. The King also shared that the Kingdom of Eswatini strongly believed that for meaningful economic development to take place, there had to be peace and stability.<\/p>\n

His Majesty, accompanied by Inkhosikati LaNkambule, arrived in Tunisia for the eighth TICAD Conference on Friday evening and was met at the airport by Tunisia\u2019s President, Kais Saied.<\/p>\n

The two-day conference which officially opened here yesterday, is attended by several leaders from the African continent. Notably absent was Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, who addressed the gathering virtually and was represented by the foreign affairs minister.<\/p>\n
