Africa-Press – Eswatini. <\/strong><\/span>African nations need to develop strategies to tackle climate change, which represents an \u201cexistential threat to the continent’s megacities\u201d, Gabonese President Ali Bongo said on Wednesday (31st) at a conference in Libreville.<\/b><\/p>\n

The capital of Gabon hosted, yesterday, the third African Climate Week conference, aimed at preparing more than a thousand African officials and experts for the positions that countries on the continent will present at the 27th annual United Nations climate conference, to be held in Egypt in November.<\/p>\n

This third African weather week takes place against a backdrop of particularly extreme weather events such as drought in East Africa and the Horn of Africa, sandstorms and extreme heat in the Sahel region of West Africa: destructive flash floods, and storm surges, including cyclones, in Central, West and Southern Africa.<\/p>\n

Sameh Shoukry, Egyptian Foreign Minister, expressed regret as host of the United Nations conference that promises made to African countries to help them fight climate change had not been fulfilled.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe international community is lagging behind on mitigation, adaptation and finance. Several pledges on climate change mitigation and adaptation finance celebrated (at the Climate Summit, late 2021) in Glasgow are yet to be fulfilled\u201d, said the head of diplomacy in Egypt.<\/p>\n

Shoukry considered \u201cthe retreat in commitments by many developed countries\u201d as a \u201ccause of concern\u201d for many African countries, underlining that \u201cthe delay in the delivery of climate finance continues to affect Africa\u2019s efforts to contribute to the global effort against climate change\u201d .<\/p>\n
