While the imports on the other hand increased to E371 million in 2021 from E221 million in 2019 reflecting an increase of 150 million emalangeni.

The minister was speaking during the 2nd Meeting of the Joint Committee on the Economic Cooperation Agreement between the Republic of China on Taiwan and the Kingdom of Eswatini held virtually last week.

Khumalo said trade between the two countries is dominated by ethyl alcohol, chemicals, manufactured goods and machinery.

“The major contributing export product is under natured ethyl alcohol which has seen a growing trend since 2019, while imports are dominated by chemicals and related products, manufactured goods, machinery and transport equipment,” the minister added.

The agreement seeks to enhance mutually beneficial bilateral economic cooperation between the two countries thus accelerating trade and investment.

“This is especially true as world economies continue to recover from the devastating effects of COVID-19, which continues to render trade liberalisation and opening of markets pertinent,” Khumalo said.

Eswatini has been utilising 16 product lines since last year and the country has requested 27 more product lines in 2022. “To this extent Eswatini appreciates the additional market access which was offered by your country last year, for 16 product lines that I believe are already being exported to Taiwan on either a duty free quota free basis or on reduced tariffs.

In a similar manner, my country will be presenting a list of 27 additional products which require duty, free market access Taiwan, and to this extent we implore your positive and kind consideration of the request,” the minister said.

Taiwan also avails other opportunities aimed at strengthening the relations between the two countries such as inviting Eswatini businesses to participate in Taiwanese Trade Fairs and other activities to showcase Eswatini’s export products.

“The trade fairs and other activities provided by yourselves are other opportunities aimed at strengthening the relationship between our countries and provide an opportunity for Eswatini businesses to showcase Eswatini export products is a positive step towards developing more value chains and exports for our micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs)”, he emphasized.

Eswatini is looking forward to more trade promotion initiatives between the two countries which may include the necessary capacity building interventions that will enable local exporters to meet all the necessary market entry requirements into Taiwan.

One major outcome of the 1st Joint Meeting of the Committee was consideration for continued provision of customised e-training courses for Eswatini MSMEs which is aimed at enhancing their capacity to trade, and to develop the use of ICT tools as an integral part of Eswatini Government’s post COVID -19 National Economic Recovery Strategy.

“We continue to welcome any relevant e-training programmes and ICT tools that will enhance our MSME competitiveness and their ability to effectively access new markets,” he said.

Eswatini has proposed that the parties look at possibilities of widening the scope of the bilateral cooperation beyond trade in goods to also cover trade in services in the near future.

“Major services such as transport, finance, telecommunications, energy, water supply and business services (i.e. “producer services”), including digital trade and e-commerce are indispensable inputs for other economic sectors, particularly in the manufacturing and agricultural sector,” the minister proposed.

The Taiwan Minister of Economic Affairs Mei-Hua Wang commended Eswatini for the continued cooperation and the proposed expansion of the product lines as well as the widening of the scope to also include trade in services. “Taiwan is committed to promoting free trade between the two countries through ensuring that most product lines are either zero tariff rated or the tariffs are reduced for Eswatini businesses to realise profits,” she added.

Eswatini promised Taiwan to work around the clock to ensure illegal protests are minimised in the garment industry through engaging relevant organizations such as the workers union.
