This attitude has led to Millennials and the Gen Zs shying away from all and any kind of agricultural activity. This actually makes agriculture to look like an exclusive activity for only those who are passionate about it yet the rest of us still need food. There are those people who prefer to contribute financially but never set foot in the fields. With this being said, agriculture still remains the biggest contributor to the economy for many African countries, Eswatini being one of them. Eswatini’s agricultural sector is the second largest contributor to the economy after the manufacturing sector. Commercial agriculture is dominated by sugar, canned fruit and beef production for export. Many Emaswati practice subsistence farming, primarily in maize cultivation.

Africa has a very youthful population with statistics revealing that in 2022, the median age in Africa is 18.8 years. By simple arithmetic this means that there are many people above 18.8 years but less than 35 as there are below 18.8 years. By extension it can be said that there is a substantial number of young people in Africa. From this simple arithmetic, it suffices to say that Africa has a huge working force and this will hold for a few more years. In fact, this is one of the reasons the continent is faced with challenges of serious unemployment. Unfortunately, if no drastic measures are taken this problem will persist for more years to come. This is a serious point to ponder upon, for governments, corporate entities and individuals. It is on this note that this article views agriculture as one of the possible ways out this quagmire Africa is currently and will continue to face.

Millennials or Gen Z as, the younger population may be referred to, will agree with me that technology has permeated all sectors of our lives. We breath and eat technology. It has even changed the face of the agriculture from what we used to know. In fact, advancements in technology have made the agricultural practice less laborious with very limited sweating. This is on the labour side, ways of farming and on the yield output. Very small pieces of land if used effectively can now lead to very high yields after limited effort. Look at how most of the South East Asian countries use limited arable land to produce high volumes of food. Agricultural activities in very small areas in some of the islands lead to large scale rice production. From this, such countries are able to feed their high populations and have surplus to sell to the rest of the world, especially African countries. It is high time the African youth acquires skills and land to venture into agriculture. This is one way of reducing unemployment while also ensuring food security. Such actions would increase opportunities and contributions to drive the continent’s economic transformation.

The face for poverty in most parts of the world is female and youth. Unemployment and lack of income generating activities are some of the precursors to poverty. For Eswatini, poverty is more pronounced in rural areas and varies among the country’s four regions and different ecological zones. For instance, the prevalence of poverty in 2010 was greatest in the Lubombo region at 69 per cent, followed by the Shiselweni region at 68 per cent. Smallholder agricultural activities remain the backbone of livelihoods, especially in the rural areas. To try and increase food security for the larger population in Eswatini, the country imports much of its agricultural products. This is due to the fact that Eswatini does not produce enough food for herself. This has been exacerbated by frequent drought, which mainly can be attributed to climate change. As such almost a quarter of the Eswatini population is food insecure and dependent on assistance.

In addition to that about a third of children under five are stunted. Meanwhile, about 67 percent of the adults in the country live in the rural areas, where farming is one of the major and easy to find vocations. In these same places, 66 percent of this population is involved in farming as a source of food and only three percent rely on farming as their main source of income (FinScope Swaziland, 2014). The small percentage of farmers who use agriculture as their main source of income face some challenges such as limited financial resources that could help them meet the market demand. They also have limited technical, management and marketing skills.

Despite all these challenges, according to a 2019 report on Africa’s youth from the Mo Ibrahim Foundation, agriculture is expected to remain the main pool of employment opportunities for Sub-Saharan African youth in the foreseeable future. “When people say agriculture is the basis of survival for African youth, I take that seriously. If our future is the land, we will need to understand how to manage it and manage it well’’ says the president of the Mo Ibrahim Foundation. One of the goals for governments should be to ensure that the youth is exposed to modern ways of farming. This includes educating farmers on everything from seed selection to fertilization techniques and how to understand the market. Outreaches need to be done to high schools to promote farming as a viable career path. To make this idea attractive more needs to be done at a policy level to make the agricultural sector productive and profitable to both investors and young people.

Currently there is a negative perspective towards agriculture because the youth is not seeing examples of positive opportunities in the sector, and partly because of the dull and hard work associated with traditional subsistence agriculture. Furthermore, the youth lacks enough information on the available financial resources and processes related to agricultural enterprises. There is also limited information on how to obtain capital, available opportunities, how to carry-out the enterprise itself, who is eligible for available funding and the duration thereof. It is not clear what the main reason for this is, whether it’s the lack of promotion or lack of transparency.

The youth also needs to be taught about the business side of agriculture. A lot of assistance just ends on the production side. The plan should be so that when agricultural entrepreneurs are successful in properly using revolving funds for their businesses, funds should come back into the finance pool so other young people can benefit. This is because, for Eswatini, there are funds dedicated for youth business initiatives. The principle governing such funds is that they should circulate so that more people can benefit. The risk therefore, would be that the funds may not come back to the pool if the youth is not properly capacitated, especially on running agricultural enterprises. If not properly managed such pool of funds may easily dry up. Once this is achieved, we will see more young people taking up agricultural careers and financers seeing it as attractive. From zero hunger to climate action, poverty eradication and job creation, agriculture plays a role in almost all of the Sustainable Development Goals for the betterment of the future.

For More News And Analysis About Eswatini Follow Africa-Press

Africa-Press – Eswatini.
