Africa-Press – Eswatini. <\/strong><\/span>The National Maize Corporation (NMC) has awarded their loyal and best suppliers with prizes amounting to E271 000.<\/b><\/p>\n

This was during an event held at the George Hotel yesterday.<\/p>\n

The best supplier Mgucisi Dlamini from Mahlangatja walked away E40 000 richer. It was disclosed that Dlamini supplied NMC with 266.17 metric tons of maize while last year he supplied 294.52 metric tons.<\/p>\n

The new prices of maize as per the adjustment made in May show that a metric increased from E3 650 to E4 420.<\/p>\n

Jika Ndlangamandla from Mshololo was on second place and he walked away with E35 000 while Thembisile Dlamini from Mahlangatja was the only female in the top 10. She snatched third place and got E32 000.<\/p>\n

An analysis of the awards indicated that first position last year recorded 284.5mt and this year it was 266.17mt, which was a decrease of 18.3mt. Five out of the 10 farmers were from Shiselweni region last year with four from Manzini and one from Hhohho.<\/p>\n

This year, six were from Shiselweni, three from Manzini and one from Hhohho. It was revealed that eight of the 10 farmers were in the Top 10 even last year. There was only one female farmer in the top 10 last year and the same thing happened this year.<\/p>\n

Minister of Agriculture Jabulani Mabuza when addressing the farmers said statistics had shown that yields for this year increased by 27 per cent.<\/p>\n

They increased from 100 000mt to 127 000mt. The minister said farmers were now very close to meeting the target of 140 000mt. He said he had also learnt that maize supplied to NMC by farmers this year alone was over 7 000mt while last year it was 5 822mt.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe wish that farmers can continue improving this way even next year. Government is doing all it can to assist farmers as you have noted through the increased farm inputs subsidies whereby government contributed 65 per cent. This means government is forking out E9 100 to meet the farmer halfway and the farmer makes a contribution of E4 900 per hectare,\u201d the minister said.<\/p>\n

He further appreciated the help received from Taiwan which donated farm implements to be used by farmers.<\/p>\n

The minister also acknowledged the concerns raised by farmers and promised that government would do everything in its power to address these challenges.<\/p>\n

The minister appreciated sponsors, which included Build It Nhlangano and Mbabane, Swazi Trac, SAS, Khuba Traders, Pannar and Buy Cash Hardware.<\/p>\n

He said the good thing about the sponsors was that they were also the ones that sold farm implements to farmers. Farmers who had attended the event received E1 000 each. NMC Agribusiness Manager Mangaliso Sihlongonyane said the awards were meant to encourage farmers who had done well.<\/p>\n

He added that it was also meant to be a platform of exchanging ideas and learning from each other.<\/p>\n

Sihlongonyane said they were also trying to encourage loyalty from farmers.<\/p>\n

He explained that these were just awards not a competition.<\/p>\n
