These were Minister of Health Lizzie Nkosi sentiments when commenting on government\u2019s new programme of distributing peritoneal dialysis packs to renal patients.<\/p>\n

Each pack, which lasts about a month, costs E17 000 and currently, 30 patients are benefitting from the programme.<\/p>\n

Speaking to EPN, Nkosi said these were significant news.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is a fantastic development in the renal care, specifically in dialysis. It will take the pressure off the traditional dialysis services,\u201d said the Minister of Health.<\/p>\n

She went on to say the developments would allow the selected tedious appropriate few to be able to dialyse at home on these technologies.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am excited about it,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

The minister revealed that the renal unit was training staff and were yet to conduct seminars for clinicians.<\/p>\n

Yesterday, we published on the Ministry of Health\u2019s development, saying the ministry has recently started a programme where it gives their renal patients peritoneal dialysis packs to dialyse at the comfort of their homes.<\/p>\n

Currently, 30 patients are in the programme and they receive peritoneal dialysis packs worth E17 000, which last for a month. This means that government spends E510 000 per months for this new programme.<\/p>\n

Worth noting is that there are two types of dialysis- the hemo (blood) dialysis which is still done in the hospital three times a week and there is the peritoneal dialysis which government has currently taken into people\u2019s home to decentralise the service.<\/p>\n

Acting Director of Health Services Dr Velephi Okello confirmed the developments, saying they were excited that the ministry had started decentralising dialysis services.<\/p>\n

\u201cBefore having this new programme, we started offering dialysis in other health care facilities besides the Mbabane Government Hospital. Dialysis is now offered at Hlatikhulu Government Hospital and Raleigh Fitkin Memorial (RFM) Hospital.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are still looking into introducing it to Pigg\u2019s Peak Hospital and re-introducing it to the Lubombo Referral as it was available during the peak of COVID-19,\u201d said the Acting Director of Health Services.<\/p>\n

Okello highlighted that nurses were also being trained to administer dialysis as professionals like doctors do and the exercise was successful as there was now less pressure on doctors.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are now happy to have the remote peritoneal dialysis which has made life even easier for patients who now have less travelling to do. Yes, they have to administer this dialysis three times a day but the convenience is that it is mobile.<\/p>\n

\u201cHowever, the peritoneal dialysis requires a scrupulously hygienic place and practices and this means that our nurses have to make rounds to our patients\u2019 homes to assess their surroundings,\u201d said Okello.<\/p>\n

When asked what increased the number of patients on dialysis, she said many people were reaching the ageing years meaning more people with NCDs (non-communicable diseases) were coming- meaning more patients needing dialysis service.<\/p>\n
