Africa-Press – Eswatini. <\/strong><\/span>Peace and security on the continent, immersed in successive conflicts, will be one of the dominant themes of the 35th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Governments of the African Union, to be held Saturday and Sunday in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.<\/b><\/p>\n

Under analysis will be the situation in Ethiopia, the country that houses the organization’s headquarters, and the crisis in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Libya, Sudan, South Sudan, Burundi, Somalia, Guinea, Mali and Burkina Faso, where the President Roch Kabore was overthrown and detained last week by the military.<\/p>\n

Also on the table is the analysis of the situation in Guinea-Bissau, where, on Tuesday, there was an attempt at a coup d’\u00e9tat.<\/p>\n

Armed men blocked access to the Presidential Palace area in Bissau, the Guinean capital, where several machine gun and bazookas were heard, a situation that had been considered a sign of a coup d’\u00e9tat.
\nThe Executive Council of the African Union meets today and tomorrow to prepare for the Summit.<\/p>\n

Francisco da Cruz, the Heads of State will also analyze terrorism and violent extremism on the continent and seek to provide a common response to the Covid-19 pandemic, which is plaguing the world.<\/p>\n

African leaders are complaining about inequality in the distribution of vaccines and in this assembly they will take a common position on the matter.<\/p>\n

“There is a need to find an answer, a more robust, more active program to face the Covid-19 pandemic”, said Francisco da Cruz, who defended the need for the continent to produce vaccines.<\/p>\n

The World Health Organization (WHO) expected 40 percent of the African population to be vaccinated by the end of last year, but according to the African Union Center for Disease Control, only 10 percent are vaccinated.
\nThe 35th Assembly of Heads of State and Government will take place under the central theme “Building resilience in nutrition on the African continent: accelerating human capital and social and economic development”.<\/p>\n

This year’s theme clearly demonstrates the link between agricultural production and food security. It is intended that the Member States make efforts so that the declaration of intent on the subject materializes in concrete actions and programs for food and nutrition development and inspires sustainable national strategies.<\/p>\n

Proclaimed in July 2002, in Durban, South Africa, to replace the Organization of African Unity (OAU), the African Union has 55 member states.<\/p>\n

The President of Senegal, Macky Sall, will assume the rotating presidency of the organization for the period 2022-2023, replacing F\u00e9lix Tshisekedi, of the DRC.<\/p>\n
