Africa-Press – Eswatini. <\/strong><\/span>Six sectors with potential profit returns in 2023 have been identified.<\/b><\/p>\n

These sectors are likely to record growth in performance and profits as numerous activities are expected to happen this year. The ministry of commerce, industry and trade is in the processes of ensuring effective implementation of the SADC protocol on trade in Eswatini. This was mentioned by Minister of Commerce, Industry and Trade Manqoba Khumalo.<\/p>\n

Khumalo said the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Protocol on Trade in Services came into force last year.<\/p>\n

\u201cEffectively, the coming into force of the Protocol on Trade in Services means that there are six negotiated priority sectors (Construction, Financial services, Energy-related services, Communication, Transportation Services and Tourism),\u201d he said. The minister said service providers in the SADC region would be able to operate preferentially within the perimeters of the agreed schedule of specific commitments and the agreed regulatory frameworks. He said the national processes to ensure effective implementation of the protocol had commenced.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Kingdom of Eswatini has also assumed the chairmanship of SACU, during the course of the 2022 to 2023 financial year and a number of regional trade and industry meetings have been held,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Strategy<\/b><\/p>\n

Khumalo added that the Economic Recovery Strategy (ERS) was taking its foam. \u201cWe are observing a private sector led economy whereby companies have engaged in expansionary and innovative programmes. This is positively directly affecting the country\u2019s capital gains in the construction level and also increasing the manufacturing value addition in our economy.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe ministry would like to commend the private sector companies that have since started to implement their ERS commitments for their collective efforts and also trusting in the country\u2019s investment environment despite the COVID- 19 pandemic and last year\u2019s political unrest,\u201d he said. The minister also mentioned that there was a need to vigorously implement policies that enhance inclusive access to innovative financing technologies. Leveraging high-knowledge intensive services to increase productivity and improve competitiveness in the private sector was key to achieving higher value-added diversification and industrialisation.<\/p>\n

Categories<\/b><\/p>\n

He said the meat value chain all categories (cattle, piggery, goats and sheep) have been on the increase. Forestry activities have also been on the increase mainly because of strong external demand, coupled with the continuous easing of restrictions regionally. The ministry has managed to successfully conduct workshops on the Legal Metrology Bill No. 27\/2020 and Measurement Unit and Measurement Standards Bill No. 14\/2020. They were both passed by the House of Assembly. The Citizen\u2019s Economic Empowerment Bill is pending tabling of Portfolio Committee in the House of Assembly. The Liquor Bill is at Portfolio Committee in the House of Assembly.<\/p>\n

Building Society investment analyst Sibusiso Dlamini said they need to first analyse the performance of the businesses before making an investment. He said it was risky to invest on speculation as there were factors beyond government\u2019s control which can affect performance. \u201cA lot of companies are still struggling to record profits due to the fact that they were not prepared for the damage that was caused by COVID-19,\u201d he said. Dlamini added that it was imperative to consider the four different types of investment in order to understand the market.<\/p>\n

Acting Principal Secretary (PS) in the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Trade, Cebile Nhlabatsi, added that Africa was seeking to find collectively, practical ways of unleashing the embedded potential of the continent.<\/p>\n

Build<\/b><\/p>\n

She said this was imperative to the continent and its people so that they can together build an integrated and peaceful continent, driven by its own people, representing a dynamic force in the international arena. To achieve this, Nhlabatsi said Africa cannot be the raw material producing and exporting economy of the past. She said the continent has to be an economy based on value-addition and industrial activities, as well as trade with itself. \u201cThe role of the private sector is very critical for changing the landscape of the African Continent,\u201d she added. The acting PS added that there was therefore a need for the private sector to collaborate with government and prioritise private public partnerships in order for us to increase our proactive capacity.<\/p>\n
