{"id":20570,"date":"2023-01-24T09:02:05","date_gmt":"2023-01-24T09:02:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/eswatini\/all-news\/photography-coal-minings-demise-and-the-people-left-behind"},"modified":"2023-01-24T10:11:47","modified_gmt":"2023-01-24T10:11:47","slug":"photography-coal-minings-demise-and-the-people-left-behind","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/eswatini\/all-news\/photography-coal-minings-demise-and-the-people-left-behind","title":{"rendered":"Photography: Coal mining&#8217;s demise and the people left behind"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>Africa-Press &#8211; Eswatini. <\/strong><\/span><b>For the past 40 years documentary photographer Roger Tiley has been capturing miners and the communities they live in as their way of life slowly disappeared.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>It is a career that has seen him charged at by police horses during the miners&#8217; strike of 1984-5 and photograph crestfallen miners as the UK&#8217;s last deep-pit mine closed in 2015.<\/p>\n<p>Roger, 62, who grew up in the mining community of Cross Keys in Caerphilly county, said after spending a year covering the miners&#8217; strike he was both physically and emotionally drained.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;d seen people, my own community suffer so much,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I wasn&#8217;t just a journalist coming in and going out. the negatives were probably thrown away, long gone,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>A day that has stuck with him is 18 June 1984, when he found himself caught up in the most violent event of the strike, the &#8220;Battle of Orgreave&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>That day police and striking miners clashed violently at Orgreave Colliery in South Yorkshire.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"976\" height=\"616\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-20560 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/static.africa-press.net\/eswatini\/sites\/33\/2023\/01\/postMediaimg_39_5.jpg\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.africa-press.net\/eswatini\/sites\/33\/2023\/01\/postMediaimg_39_5.jpg 976w, https:\/\/static.africa-press.net\/eswatini\/sites\/33\/2023\/01\/postMediaimg_39_5-300x189.jpg 300w, https:\/\/static.africa-press.net\/eswatini\/sites\/33\/2023\/01\/postMediaimg_39_5-768x485.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 976px) 100vw, 976px\" \/><br \/>\nWoman working at a cigar factory in Cardiff in 1985<\/p>\n<p>Debate goes on about who acted first, but police horses were sent to charge the crowd up the field and officers followed to make arrests. I was so scared,&#8221; said Roger.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I was stood right in the middle of it all and I I just remember running for my life away from the horses charging. home is demolished as he looks on in 1983 &#8211; he had lived in the miners cottage at The Ranks in Abercarn, Caerphilly, all of his life<\/p>\n<p>After 364 days on strike, the miners returned to work defeated.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;After that, the pits were closing one after the other, that was all that was on the news &#8211; it was a very sad time,&#8221; said Roger.<\/p>\n<p>In the 40 yeas Roger has been taking pictures of miners, attitudes towards coal have shifted and there has been a move towards greener energy.<\/p>\n<p>He said he had witnessed &#8220;incredible changes and not for the good&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m sorry to see the pits gone&#8230; Kellingley Colliery in North Yorkshire.<\/p>\n<p>He spent time underground with the miners and attended the party they held to mark its closure.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It was a difficult situation, you&#8217;re photographing people losing their jobs and jobs they love,&#8221;
