Africa-Press – Eswatini. <\/strong><\/span>Almost two years later, the E13 million worth of cars that were destroyed during the June 29, 2021 unrest were removed this morning to MacSteel in Matsapha where they were sold as scrap.<\/b><\/p>\n

The destroyed cars have been a constant reminder of the unfortunate events that resulted in billions of Emalangeni\u2019s worth of property being destroyed across the country.<\/p>\n

Haji Brothers co-director Mubashar Munawar says the government through the Reconstruction Fund gave them under E2 million for the offices and vehicles.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhilst we appreciate government support, it however falls short to get us back in business. With the E800 000 received in compensation for the vehicles, it can only get us a few cars given today\u2019s import restrictions,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Munawar said even the 90 scrap vehicles will not give them enough money to pay for the security guard who was deployed on the premises in the past two years.<\/p>\n

The damage at the time amounted to E13 million, but when compared to now, where shipping prices, customs and excise duties, together with the price of cars in Japan have increased rapidly, the amount could exceed E20 million.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the Municipal Council of Manzini has been engaging and communicating with the relevant stakeholder regarding the removal of the damaged motor vehicles on the property for the betterment of the city and the surrounding neighbourhoods. Council further recommended the Haji Brothers engage a reputable recycling company that will assist with the overall process of disposing of the damaged cars.<\/p>\n
