Africa-Press – Eswatini. <\/strong><\/span>The National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA) is going to host El Nino Indaba today.<\/b><\/p>\n

Set to take place the whole day tomorrow at Villas Hotel in Ezulwini, the Indaba will be for sharing experiences on the devastating impact of the 2015\/2016 El Nino-induced drought.<\/p>\n

According to NDMA Communications Officer Wandile Mavuso, they intend to raise awareness and preparedness on the projected Elnino persisting into the Southern Hemisphere summer.<\/p>\n

\u201cEl Nino is forecast to develop in the next couple of months with a greater than 90 per cent chance of it persisting into the Southern Hemisphere summer,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

In addition to that, he said the National Disaster Management Agency El Nino Indaba will impact strategic response and planning.<\/p>\n

According to the weather news, El Nino is warming of water surface temperatures in the eastern and central Pacific Ocean, linked to extreme weather conditions from tropical cyclones to heavy rainfall to severe droughts.<\/p>\n

The weather news website further revealed that the likelihood of El Nin\u0303o developing later this year is increasing, according to a new update from the World Meteorological Organization (WMO).<\/p>\n

This would have the opposite impact on weather and climate patterns in many regions of the world to the long-running La Nin\u0303a and would likely fuel higher global temperatures.<\/p>\n

The unusually stubborn La Nin\u0303a has now ended after a three-year run and the tropical Pacific is currently in an ENSO-neutral state (neither El Nin\u0303o nor La Nin\u0303a).<\/p>\n

\u201cThere is a 60 per cent chance for a transition from ENSO-neutral to El Nin\u0303o during May-July 2023, and this will increase to about 70 per cent in June-August and 80 per cent between July and September, according to the Update, which is based on input from WMO Global Producing Centres of Long-Range Forecasts and expert assessment,\u201d reads the weather news website in part.<\/p>\n

At this stage there is no indication of the strength or duration of El Nin\u0303o.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe just had the eight warmest years on record, even though we had a cooling La Nin\u0303a for the past three years and this acted as a temporary brake on global temperature increase. The development of an El Nin\u0303o will most likely lead to a new spike in global heating and increase the chance of breaking temperature records,\u201d said WMO Secretary-General Professor Petteri Taalas.<\/p>\n

According to WMO\u2019s State of the Global Climate reports, 2016 is the warmest year on record because of the \u201cdouble whammy\u201d of a very powerful El Nin\u0303o event and human-induced warming from greenhouse gases. The effect on global temperatures usually plays out in the year after its development and so will likely be most apparent in 2024.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe world should prepare for the development of El Nin\u0303o, which is often associated with increased heat, drought or rainfall in different parts of the world. It might bring respite from the drought in the Horn of Africa and other La Nin\u0303a- related impacts but could also trigger more extreme weather and climate events. This highlights the need for the UN Early Warnings for All initiative to keep people safe,\u201d said Prof. Taalas. No two El Nin\u0303o events are the same and the effects depend partly on the time of year. WMO and National Meteorological Hydrological Services will therefore be closely monitoring developments.<\/p>\n
