Africa-Press – Eswatini. <\/strong><\/span>His Majesty King Mswati III has officially launched the historical construction of Mpakeni Dam during a sod cutting ceremony that was held at Mpakeni, under Sigwe Inkhundla yesterday.<\/b><\/p>\n

It is part of the first component (Phase 1) of the Mkhondvo-Ngwavuma Water Augmentation Project that will create jobs for 10 000 people and benefit 100 000 Emaswati.<\/p>\n

The main contractor is a Chinese company, Syno Hydro that will collaborate with Eswatini Water Development Enterprise (ESWADE).<\/p>\n

The King said this phase was worth over E3.5 billion.<\/p>\n

It is funded by the African Development Bank (AfDB).<\/p>\n

He said the dam\u2019s construction would also bring about the creation of a state of the art clinic and the road network improved as it would be tarred. He said he was pleased to bless the water project that would help Eswatini to grow and improve the economy through the agriculture sector.<\/p>\n

The King added that it was also important for the nation because the dam would help serve as a water reservoir, storing enough water and ensure food security.<\/p>\n

His Majesty said in the past, Lavumisa and surrounding areas experienced severe drought due to concerning heatwaves and climate change, as a result, livestock and people greatly suffered.<\/p>\n

He added that he was appreciative of such projects that would bring assistance so that heatwaves and drought don\u2019t have much effect anymore, water will be available even during famines for the survival of humankind.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou can attest that you have seen and heard the fruits of this project even before it begins. We also appreciate the allocated families for cooperation since there was no resistance faced by ESWADE, ministry of agriculture and ministry of public works and transport.<\/p>\n

I am also told that you were moved to better and high standards. Other dams will follow in the region as the drama team demonstrated during their play, as the aim is to have the whole Shiselweni region to have sufficient water supply; from Mkhondvo to Mahamba Gorge will be other phases as the water project takes place.<\/p>\n

This is a historical event that will be shared with future generations,\u201d he stated.<\/p>\n

Adding, the King appreciated the African Development Bank that had representatives at the event for funding the development project. He expressed his appreciation to the bank for assisting the country at a time of need.<\/p>\n

He said the bank also helped to find the most suitable contractor for the project; Syno Hydro. He expressed his hope that they will do a commendable job.<\/p>\n
