Africa-Press – Eswatini. <\/strong><\/span>It would have seemed that the worst was over for Emaswati students caught in the Russia-Ukraine conflict with the Ukraine-based students arriving safely home these past few days.<\/p>\n

However, as the world turns its back on Russia with sanctions imposed as a result of declaring war on Ukraine, the ramifications are felt by Eswatini nationals in Russia. Giant credit card companies Visa and Mastercard announced that they were suspending operations in Russia in protest of the country\u2019s invasion of Ukraine.<\/p>\n

This has left over 40 Emaswati students in Russia in panic mode as they cannot access funds on their bank accounts following the credit card suspension. The suspension of credit card companies follows a request by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Saturday, where he pleaded with the international community to continue sanctioning Russia in an attempt to add to the financial turmoil.<\/p>\n

Consequent to this request and a few hours later, Visa and Mastercard announced that any card issued outside the country (Russia) would not work at Russian shops or ATMs, leaving local students high and dry.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are compelled to act following Russia\u2019s unprovoked invasion of Ukraine, and the unacceptable events that we have witnessed. This war and the on-going threat to peace and stability demand we respond in line with our values.<\/p>\n

We regret the impact this will have on our valued colleagues, and on the clients, partners, merchants and cardholders we serve in Russia,” said Visa Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Al Kelly in a statement.<\/p>\n

One of the students in Russia, Sakhile Shabangu confirmed their frustration, revealing that what compounds the situation was the fact that parents had recently sent their monthly allowances since it was month-end last week.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor the past few weeks, we\u2019ve had glitches whilst trying to use our cards, but then on Sunday, they were completely shut down. We even tried to go to the bank to at least negotiate the withdrawal of the funds, but those efforts were futile,\u201d he said. \u201cMost of us received our monthly allowances last week or the week before, so most of us pretty much still had a significant portion of our money there.<\/p>\n

We also have Russian bank cards, but then the problem is it seems money can\u2019t be sent from home straight to us,\u201d said the youngster. Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Corporation Thuli Dladla said they were aware of the struggles faced by the students, adding that the ministry had already formed a WhatsApp group where they have all the students\u2019 parents communicating with the ministry.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are currently informing parents and advising them as to what the next move can be since that is all we can do. The decision lies sorely with them, but they are well aware that the economic sanctions imposed on Russia will have a negative effect on their children\u2019s lives,\u201d said the minister.<\/p>\n

She also explained that many students were quite hesitant on coming back home as of yet, and were keen on monitoring the situation first before making a decision which heavily impacts their futures hastily. \u201cMany of them fear coming back home and then not being able to continue with their education since some universities are still insisting on face-to-face lessons.<\/p>\n

Parents have also paid tuition, so they fear getting their children back home in the name of safety and then regretting that decision a week later if the situation gets to normalise soon,\u201d said Dladla.<\/p>\n
