Killers of the Flower Moon<\/b><\/p>\n

Martin Scorsese directs this fact-based Apple TV Plus original drama from a script he wrote with Eric Roth, a seven-time Oscar-nominated screenwriter (and winner for \u2018\u2019Forrest Gump\u2019\u2019).<\/p>\n

Starring Robert De Niro, Leonardo DiCaprio, Lily Gladstone and Jesse Plemons, the film is based on David Grann\u2019s best-selling 2017 non-fiction book by the same name, about the FBI\u2019s investigation into a series of early-20th-century killings of Osage people, whose oil-rich lands in Oklahoma led to acts of violence by white interlopers.<\/p>\n

After an emotional screening at this year\u2019s Cannes Film Festival, the director was given a 10-minute standing ovation.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Pigeon Tunnel\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n

Documentarian Errol Morris\u2019s latest film may have the most intriguing title on this list.<\/p>\n

Borrowing its name from best-selling spy novelist John le Carre\u0301\u2019s 2016 memoir \u2013 a reference to the author\u2019s childhood memory of a seaside shooting range that used real pigeons as targets \u2013 the film is structured around a conversation between le Carre\u0301, who died in 2020, and the director, interspersed with archival footage and dramatised vignettes that illuminate the life and career of the former MI5 officer born David Cornwell.<\/p>\n

\u201cPriscilla\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n

Based on the 1985 memoir \u2018\u2019Elvis and Me\u2019\u2019 by Priscilla Presley and Sandra Harmon, Sofia Coppola\u2019s biopic stars Cailee Spaeny as Priscilla Beaulieu, who met Elvis Presley (Jacob Elordi) at age 14 and became his bride at 21. From the director of \u2018\u2019Marie Antoinette,\u2019\u2019 this counterpoint to Baz Luhrmann\u2019s \u2018\u2019Elvis\u2019\u2019 offers another look at rock-and-roll royalty \u2013 from the perspective of the King\u2019s queen.<\/p>\n

\u201cRustin\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n

Actor Colman Domingo reunites with George C. Wolfe, his director on the double-Oscar-winning \u2018\u2019Ma Rainey\u2019s Black Bottom\u2019\u2019, to tell the story of Bayard Rustin, the gay black socialist pacifist best known as the organiser of the1963 march on Washington.<\/p>\n

Written by Dustin Lance Black (\u2019\u2019Under the Banner of Heaven\u2019\u2019) and Julian Breece (\u2019\u2019When They See Us\u2019\u2019), the film \u2013 which premie\u0300red at the Toronto Film Festival \u2013 focuses on how Rustin was pushed out of the limelight of a civil rights movement because of his sexuality.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Marvels\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n

In this next chapter of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the powers of Brie Larson\u2019s Carol Danvers, a.k.a. superhero Captain Marvel, become intertwined with those of two other characters from comics lore: Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris) \u2013 who became the comics\u2019 first female Captain Marvel in 1982, before even Danvers \u2013 and Iman Vellani\u2019s Kamala Khan, appearing as Ms. Marvel, Marvel\u2019s first Muslim superhero, on Disney+.<\/p>\n

Yes, it\u2019s all very complicated and metaverse-y, but if you\u2019ve come this far without throwing up your hands in frustration, why quit now?<\/p>\n

\u201cNext Goal Wins\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n

After making two muscle-bound Thor movies for Marvel \u2013 \u2018\u2019Ragnarok\u2019\u2019 and \u2018\u2019Love and Thunder\u2019\u2019 \u2013 not to mention the prestige Holocaust dramedy \u2018\u2019Jojo Rabbit,\u2019\u2019 for which he won a screenwriting Oscar, Taika Waititi returns to his roots in quirky indie filmmaking.<\/p>\n

This modest film is based on the true story of Thomas Rongen (Michael Fassbender), the soccer coach who took the American Samoa national football team, one of the lousiest teams in the world, and tried to get them into shape to qualify for the 2014 World Cup.<\/p>\n

Based on the 2014 documentary by the same name, \u2018\u2019Next Goal Wins\u2019\u2019 has a bit of an underdog back story of its own: The movie, completed in early 2020, first encountered release delays because of Covid and then had to be recast in 2021, with Will Arnett in a supporting role after Armie Hammer was accused of sexual abuse.<\/p>\n

(Releasing in cinemas on December 22)<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n

This fifth instalment of the \u201cHunger Games\u201d saga is set 64 years before the action of the first film.<\/p>\n

It centres on teenage Coriolanus Snow (Tom Blyth), well before that character would grow up to become the tyrannical president of Panem, played by Donald Sutherland, who would preside over the torment of Jennifer Lawrence\u2019s Katniss Everdeen.<\/p>\n

The fifth film in the series is based on a 2020 book by franchise creator Suzanne Collins \u2013 a prequel that The Washington Post described as dark yet offering satisfying answers to fans\u2019 questions.<\/p>\n

\u2018\u2019One of the delicious qualities of a prequel is that it fills in the blanks,\u2019\u2019 Karin Tanabe wrote.<\/p>\n

\u2018\u2019For those who lapped up the trilogy and have been waiting 10 long years for answers \u2013 to questions like \u2018Which unhinged savage came up with kids killing kids?\u2019 or \u2018What\u2019s the meaning behind the song \u2018\u2019The Hanging Tree?\u2019\u2019\u2019 \u2013 Collins has them.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n
