Africa-Press – Eswatini. <\/strong><\/span>This was said by Lomahasha Central High School Head teacher Muzi Tsabedze, when asked what he could say about the assertions made by University of Eswatini (UNESWA) Vice Chancellor Professor Justice Thwala, to the effect that Form V pupils have to wait for a year and a half to be admitted to this institution due to a backlog. Thwala, when addressing His Majesty King Mswati III and dignitaries on Saturday during the 41st graduation Ceremony of the University of Eswatini (UNESWA) held at Kwaluseni campus, said the university was on its 2022\/2023 academic year instead of the 2023\/2024 academic year. He said it would take qualifying Form V pupils one and half years of waiting to resume studies at the university, which will lead to a backlog in the education system of the country.<\/b><\/p>\n

The head teacher said these latest developments will have a negative impact on the country\u2019s education system, on the basis that the pupils who were currently writing their exams would be affected psychologically. He stated that the pupils sitting their exams aimed to obtain better results to ensure they qualified for enrolment at the university. Tsabedze said the pupils would be frustrated and depressed during the waiting period of admission to the university. He urged government and the university\u2019s administration to find a lasting solution to this matter. \u201cIt is a disaster and an unfortunate situation because our pupils are currently writing their exams and aim to do better so that they qualify for enrolment at the university. If they make it and excel in their exams, they will be frustrated if they have to work for that period of time while waiting to be admitted to the university,\u201d Tsabedze said.<\/p>\n

His counterpart at Mambane High School Zodwa Mgabhi echoed Tsabedze\u2019s sentiments and mentioned that a solution had to be found to address the matter. \u201cIt is an unfortunate situation but we are optimistic that government will address it,\u201d she said. A head teacher in one the schools in the Lubombo Region noted that government needed to purposely diversify education to mitigate against such unfortunate situations. The head teacher, who asked that his identity be concealed, said government had to increase the number of vocational training institutions to accommodate more students to be trained in manufacturing, agriculture, information and communication technology, engineering and artisan skills, among many others.<\/p>\n

Pandemic<\/b><\/p>\n

\u201cThe emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic disturbed a number of things in the whole world and it is unfortunate that the pupils, after excelling in their exams, will have to wait for that period of time, subjecting them to depression and anxiety. Government should change direction in our education system as it has been evident that it is now saturated,\u201d said the head teacher. Swaziland National Union of Students (SNUS) Deputy Secretary General (DSG) Monqoba Motsa said the university was in a deep academic crisis. The DSG shared that the university had been apportining blame to students who had been engaging in class boycotts over a litany of issues, including the late release of allowances. He added that the volatile political situation also had an impact on the academic calendar of the university. \u201cOut of the three campuses, only Mbabane Campus is still operating within their academic calendar; Luyengo and Kwaluseni are lagging behind. We hope the administration will find a solution,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Swaziland National Association of Teachers (SNAT) Secretary General (SG) Lot Vilakati described the situation as a failure in the existence of the university. Vilakati said the announcement by the vice-chancellor was shifting the blame to the students on the past class boycotts over allowances. The SG explained that students were citizens of the country and had the right to education. He said the latest announcement by the university was an infringement on the students\u2019 right to pursue their chosen career path at an institution of higher learning. Vilakati said the delay in the payment of salaries to lecturers and workers at the university had been detrimental to the academic calendar of the institution as well.<\/p>\n

He mentioned that the class boycotts by the students to be paid their allowances and scholarships had also disturbed the university\u2019s academic calendar.<\/p>\n

He stated that his union and SNUS had signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA), which compelled SNAT to actively get involved in issues that affected students. \u201cIt calls for a vote of no confidence to the existence of the university. The university is in a deep academic crisis and government has to find a solution. The pupils will be frustrated by waiting for that period,\u201d he said. On another note, the SG further congratulated the students who graduated at Ngwane Teachers College and UNESWA and indicated that they had to wait for five years before being hired by government, as only those who graduated in 2018 stood to be considered for posts in the teaching profession.<\/p>\n

Majority<\/b><\/p>\n

The Ministry of Education and Training Acting Principal Secretary (PS), Naniki Mnisi, said a majority of higher learning institutions were behind in their academic schedules, after the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic that compelled them to shut down for a while. Mnisi said the university was an independent entity, hence it was imperative that it resolved the challenges they were facing amicably. The acting PS noted that the education system had to acclimatise to the \u2018new normal\u2019 after the COVID-19 pandemic. \u201cAll institutions of higher learning were negatively affected immensely after the emergence of the pandemic. We take note that they are behind in their academic calendar and that has affected their learning schedule. As an independent institution, we hope they will work around the clock in addressing these challenges,\u201d Mnisi said.<\/p>\n

Renowned Psychologist Ndo Mdlalose emphasised the need for counselling if parents noted that their children were not acting normal due to frustration. Mdlalose said it was important that parents monitored their children at all times. The psychologist explained that parents should seek help from a professional therapist, who would be able to engage them in a process that would unravel all the emotional depression due to being subjected to waiting for this extended period. \u201cIt is an unfortunate situation as most of the pupils will be subjected to depression for waiting that period of time before admission. Parents should always be vigilant and monitor their children and if they note that there are changes in their attitudes and actions, they should seek professional help,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
