UNICEF fully supports the efforts of the Government of Eswatini in this endeavour to ensure that every child is registered.

“The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) Article 7 recognises that all children have a right to birth registration.

“The Article states that the child shall be registered immediately after birth and shall have the right from birth to a name and the right to acquire a nationality,” he noted.

Adding, he said children who were not registered and lacked birth certificates were not recognised as citizens and as a result, were not afforded certain legal protections and further had no access to government services such as education grants.

He said it was pleasing to note that government as a signatory to the UNCRC was committed to ensuring that children enjoy their right to be registered.

Parsi expressed appreciation of the efforts to establish a rigorous health facility-based birth registration intervention that would ensure that no new born baby leaves the health facility without being registered and issued with a birth certificate.

“This contribution will support the scaling up of the birth registration services offered in health facilities in terms of equipping them.

“We therefore request the ministry to facilitate the opening and operationalisation of the birth registration offices in those health facilities in a timely manner in order to make it possible to have 100 per cent of the births in hospital registered and that new-born children go home with one of their important rights fulfiled during the first days of their lives.

“May I reaffirm UNICEF’s continued support in promotion and protection of the rights of every child. In keeping with our core mandate of a world where the rights of every child are realised, UNICEF pledges to continue to strengthen the partnership in birth registration programming with the government and other collaborating partners.

Meanwhile, Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Home Affairs, Nhlanhla Nxumalo, appreciated the kind gesture and support from UNICEF, stating that it was not the first time the organisation came through for them.

He noted that birth registration was a right of every child.

And said several studies informed their decision to start registering children after birth.

“It was discovered that only 54 per cent of children under the age of five had been registered and only eight per cent had verified birth certificates,” he said.

Nxumalo said an assessment supported by UNICEF and the World Health organisation concluded that Eswatini had a weak and uncoordinated registration and vital civil statistics.

To move from that undesirable state, he said a team from the ministries of home affairs and health and development partners was put together to find solutions that culminated to providing birth registration in all health facilities that provide maternity services.

“Other partners are World Vision and PACT. we are targeting a few government hospitals and health centres and our target is that all health facilities offering maternity services register the birth certificates,” he said.

List of donated equipment:
4 Desktop computers
4 printers
4 desks
4 chairs
2 laptops

For More News And Analysis About Eswatini Follow Africa-Press

Africa-Press – Eswatini.
