Africa-Press – Eswatini. <\/strong><\/span>It has only just started raining to truly usher in the summer season and already the dreadful drowning phenomenon has already claimed lives of Emaswati who were trying to cross flooded rivers.<\/b><\/p>\n

It has only been ten days into the month of November but already there have been two cases of drowning recorded. A 15-year-old boy drowned as he was trying to cross Lusutfu River, while a 45-year man suffered the same fate as he tried to cross Tiyengu River.<\/p>\n

These two incidents are not the only ones recorded since the beginning of the summer season which is charactered by rains and hot temperatures.<\/p>\n

Using the logic that a life lost is one life too many, these incidents should be a cause of concern for the country.<\/p>\n

The occurrence of these incidents is even more damning for the Royal Eswatini Police Service which is an entity that is tasked with safe guarding the lives of Emaswati, especially because they are evidence that people lack the sense of prioritising personal safety around water bodies.<\/p>\n

It is for this reason that the police service finds it vital to continue creating awareness and emphasise that members of the public should always exercise caution around water bodies to avoid drowning incidents, especially during a season which is characteristic of heavy rains.<\/p>\n

The observation is that during the summer season drowning incidents tend to display an upward trend with people falling victim to this phenomenon under different circumstances.<\/p>\n

Victims of drowning include both the young and old with the circumstance varying from crossing flooded rivers, swimming and fishing.<\/p>\n

As the summer season comes with heavy rains, these may cause flooding which increases water levels in rivers or streams and as people try to across they are swept away in the tide.<\/p>\n

The safest thing to do once a river is flooded or the bridge is submerged, is not to cross.<\/p>\n

People also drown as they go for swimming due to hot temperatures that are experienced during the summer season.<\/p>\n

The overriding principle should be that people especially children do not go swimming without an adult who is capable to assist present.<\/p>\n

Furthermore, if you cannot swim stay away from water bodies.<\/p>\n

Toddlers may drown in buckets, basins and containers with water if they are left unattended. This is why parents and guardians are urged to keep such containers out of the reach of children or tightly closed.<\/p>\n

Since it is a Police mandate is to protect life, the organisation has a Search and Rescue Team or \u2018Scuba Divers\u2019 who respond to water related emergencies.<\/p>\n

This Unit assists with rescuing people from water bodies and in unfortunate incidents retrieving victims of drowning.<\/p>\n

However, the target is to ensure that members of the public are empowered sufficiently on ways to maximise safety around water bodies so that drowning incidents are avoided altogether.<\/p>\n

This calls for each and every individual to religiously practise the following tips in the prevention of drownings.<\/p>\n

Tips to follow on keeping safe around water:<\/p>\n

n Do not cross flooded rivers, dams and low bridges.<\/p>\n

n Avoid crossing rivers at night<\/p>\n

n If you cannot swim, stay away from water bodies such as dams and rivers.<\/p>\n

n Children should not be allowed to go swimming unsupervised.<\/p>\n

n Swimming pools should be covered or water drained out if not in use.<\/p>\n

n Buckets and other containers that are used for storing water must be sealed off or closed and stored out of reach of young children.<\/p>\n
