Africa-Press – Eswatini. <\/strong><\/span>In a bold and unapologetic speech, the Government Spokesperson Alpheous Nxumalo took aim at political parties, describing them as being in intensive care unit (ICU) status.<\/b><\/p>\n

Nxumalo said political parties were in a coma in terms of political position and have nothing to offer to Emaswati in the system of government.<\/p>\n

He made these comments in the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) current affairs show on Friday afternoon.<\/p>\n

Nxumalo was reacting on the appointment of the new Prime Minister (PM) Russell Dlamini.<\/p>\n

The government mouthpiece started by hailing the national general elections which he said were a resounding success and were then followed by Sibaya and the subsequent appointment of the PM.<\/p>\n

Nxumalo stated that the elections were even praised by the world as His Majesty King Mswati III reported to the Southern African Development Community (SADC) leaders and also to the United Nation (UN) leaders during the UN General assembly, that the country was going to elect a new government to be elected by Emaswati at their will and in a fair manner.<\/p>\n

He explained that Emaswati further gathered at the Sibaya as per His Majesty’s call, where they engaged in People\u2019s Parliament, deliberating on issues affecting the country and what they wished to see happening going forward.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are happy as a country that we have a new government in office. Before the PM was appointed, Emaswati had an opportunity to advise the king where they made it known that the power to appoint a PM should remain with the King,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Adding, he stated that the deliberations made during the People\u2019s Parliament formed guidelines for the new government in the next five years.<\/p>\n

Disasters<\/p>\n

Nxumalo went on to state that the country declared poverty and unemployment as a national disaster and they were happy to have a PM who knows about disasters, as he had previously worked on disaster issues before being appointed into the current position.<\/p>\n

Furthermore, he revealed that they were now waiting for the appointment of cabinet ministers and the deputy prime minister (DPM) in the upcoming days.<\/p>\n

Reacting to Nxumalo\u2019s sentiments, the Swaziland Liberation Movement (SWALIMO) Spokesperson Thandaza Silolo defended political parties, saying that government was very optimistic these days and they felt that they were on top of everything.<\/p>\n

Banned<\/p>\n

Silolo said political parties were aimed at creating competitive and accountable governance. He stated that as long political parties remained banned, the people were allegedly denied a lot in terms of an accountability and people driven governance.<\/p>\n

The Ngwane National Liberatory Congress (NNLC) President Sibongile Mazibuko said Nxumalo was just sharing his opinions not the current position on the ground.<\/p>\n

Mazibuko said a number of people in different constituencies spoke in one voice that they wanted change in governance. She said it was wrong to make conclusions based on the recent Sibaya because not all Emaswati attended and some of those who were present, were not afforded a chance to make their submissions.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe people who were present cannot decide for the whole country, on what Emaswati want. Some went back home without being afforded a chance to make their submissions so this is not a true reflection of what the people want,\u201d Mazibuko said.<\/p>\n

The Swaziland United Democratic Front (SUDF) Chairperson Lucky Dlamini said Nxumalo was in denial of the reality, as people had accepted the idea of change in the country.<\/p>\n

Dlamini said the county was faced with a number of challenges which prompted His Majesty King Mswati III declaring a disaster.<\/p>\n

He stated that declaring a disaster meant that the country was facing problems beyond government capabilities.<\/p>\n

He explained that the current situation faced by the country was a result of alleged failure by government.<\/p>\n

Dlamini mentioned that Nxumalo was all about protecting government\u2019s image yet the situation on the ground was different, people allegedly want change.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe only thing I can only say is that, Tinkhundla is the one in ICU. Look at the heath crisis, infrastructure, poverty and the high unemployment rate. This tells you that government failed the people,\u201d Dlamini said.<\/p>\n
