Africa-Press – Eswatini. <\/strong><\/span>The Ministry of Natural Resources and Energy is already working on the development of a series of renewable energy projects, through Public Private Partnership (PPP).<\/b><\/p>\n

Prince Lonkhokhela, the Minister of Natural Resources and Energy said Eswatini aims to increase her electricity generation capacity through the use of sustainable and environmentally friendly technologies, in line with energy transition targets. The minister was speaking during the official opening of the European Union (EU) Green power transformation forum 2023, held at the Royal Villas. The two days forum seeks to look at the developments over the past year in Eswatini\u2019s power system transformation, offering valuable insights from various stakeholders. It will also cover key achievements, challenges and collaborative efforts in Eswatini, exploring legislative reforms, successful partnerships and future priorities for accelerating the energy transition. According to the minister, the projects on the pipeline include 75 Megawatts (MW) of solar power capacity, which is now at the final stage of procurement and the commissioning is planned for May-June 2025.<\/p>\n

Another project is the 40MW of biomass power capacity, which is at the Request for Proposal stage and the commissioning is planned for July 2026. Prince Lonkhokhela said these projects would be developed by the private sector in partnership with the government, through the provision of the necessary support that will be required to ensure that the projects were successfully developed.<\/p>\n

Power<\/b><\/p>\n

Other renewable energy projects being implemented are; a feasibility study for a 33MW hydro power capacity from lower Maguga and Maguga expansion, which has been completed and funding for implementation is being solicited; 13MW of Hydro power from Lower Maguduza which is expected to reach financial close by December 2023 and construction is expected to commence in April 2024. The minister added that a biomass assessment has been completed by the ministry working with the biomass producers, which revealed an additional generation capacity of up to 80MW and the procurement of this capacity is expected to be launched in 2024. He said the government, through the energy Regulator has expressed a desire for further technical support funding, towards realising this significant national project.<\/p>\n

The minister said over and above energy security, these projects aligned well with the country\u2019s target of achieving universal access to affordable, reliable and modern energy by 2030.<\/p>\n

He added that towards achieving the universal access goal, the ministry has prioritised the rural electrification programme to connect households through grid extension, as well as through the deployment of off-grid solutions of which renewable energy will be key. The prince said through this programme, the country\u2019s current electricity access rate was at 82 per cent nationally. He said energy efficiency also played a key role in fast tracking energy transition and as such the ministry has developed an Energy Efficiency and Conservation Policy, as well as the National Energy Efficiency Strategy and Action Plan which set out clear activities and targets for energy efficiency measures in the country.<\/p>\n

Ambitions<\/b><\/p>\n

The minister said the aforementioned renewable energy and energy efficiency measures aligned with the international climate ambitions of limiting the increase in average global temperatures to 1.50C. He said that it was worth mentioning that government was working from a balanced approach, where the issue of baseload power is also considered to ensure continuous supply of electricity that would drive economic growth. \u201cIt is encouraging to know that private companies also install their own generation capacities, mainly through solar PV,\u201d said the minister. He said through support from the EU, the Energy Regulator and the Eswatini Electricity Company (EEC), were working towards finalising some of the reforms which include the Small-Scale Embedded Generation framework as well as the Wheeling Framework, which were aimed at ensuring that the private sector plays a meaningful role in the electricity supply industry. \u201cThis is over and above the mini-grids guidelines that the Regulator has developed, which seek to prescribe the rules and procedures for deployment of off-grid systems in the country,\u201d he said. He added that his ministry has prioritised mobilisation of funding for feasibility studies which were crucial for energy planning, such studies include the Ngwempisi multipurpose dam for power generation, potable water and agricultural use, a wind and solar resource map for the country and mini-micro hydro power assessments to name some.<\/p>\n
