Africa-Press – Eswatini. <\/strong><\/span>Prime Minister (PM) Russell Mmiso Dlamini turned down a lucrative job offer in Europe to serve his home country.<\/b><\/p>\n

Dlamini, who has been in office for about two weeks now, turned down the offer at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. At that time, he was the Chief Executive Officer of the National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA), which was one of the organisations that were in the forefront in dealing with the pandemic, through the procurement of personal protective equipment (PPE) for various ministries, among others. On November 3, 2023, Dlamini was appointed PM by His Majesty King Mswati III. In an interview with the PM, he confirmed the lucrative job offer that he turned down in Europe, but did not wish to comment much on the matter.<\/p>\n

Clarity<\/b><\/p>\n

The PM had been asked to give clarity on claims that when His Majesty King Mswati III appointed him as PM at the People\u2019s Parliament, he had been offered a well-paying job in Russia and was on his way out of the NDMA to take up the new job opportunity. \u201cWhat happened is that in the middle of COVID-19, I had a lucrative job offer at an organisation, I will not mention, in Europe. I turned down the offer because the country was in the middle of a crisis and the NDMA was established primarily to deal with crises, so it did not make sense for me to abandon the nation at a time when they needed us the most,\u201d said the PM briefly.<\/p>\n

Appointment<\/b><\/p>\n

He said it was not true that prior to his appointment as PM by His Majesty the King, he had an offer in Russia. He said he believed the people talking of a lucrative job offer were most likely referring to the one he turned down in Europe at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. \u201cWhen His Majesty the King appointed me as PM, I had no job offer. I was still at the NDMA and I still had a running contract with them. I was still to serve the agency as my contract had not elapsed,\u201d he elaborated. Worth noting is that the COVID-19 pandemic had its first confirmed case in Eswatini in 2020 and was at its peak between 2021 and 2022.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, at the closing event of a week-long Cholera Eswatini National Simulation Exercise, which was held at Ndvwabangeni, Etikhuneni on Friday, the Acting NDMA CEO, Victor Mahlalela, highlighted that the head of government may have been appointed as the country\u2019s PM, but he was still very active when it came to activities of the NDMA. Mahlalela substantive position at the agency is that of Operations Director. In an interview with this publication, Mahlalela revealed that despite his appointment, the PM was still active in the operations of the agency, as they would consult with him now and then. \u201cI am trying my level best to deliver as the acting CEO (at NDMA). I can confidently state that it is workable and we still very much work together with the new PM,\u201d said Mahlalela. The acting CEO highlighted that he received help in carrying out many of his functions of the agency from the PM.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe continues to be active in many undertakings of the agency. If there is something we cannot figure out, we meet with him and discuss how we can deal with that particular situation,\u201d said the acting CEO.<\/p>\n

Education<\/b><\/p>\n

In terms of education, the premier holds a Master of Philosophy (MPhil) in Sustainable Development Planning and Management from the University of Stellenbosch, South Africa. While doing this course, he studied complexity theory and systems thinking, applied economics, biodiversity and sustainable agriculture. He is also armed with a BA Honours in Development Administration from the University of South Africa (UNISA) and a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture from the University of Eswatini (UNESWA). The King appointed him to lead government business in the 12th Parliament. As an expert in disasters, the King highlighted during his appointment that he was the right person to deal with disasters, such as poverty, as declared by the King to be a disaster in the kingdom during Sibaya.<\/p>\n
