Africa-Press – Eswatini. <\/strong><\/span>As a mother, a wife, a Swazi citizen and an executive of one of the Kingdoms Public Enterprises, I am deeply concerned about the pervasive issue of gender-based violence (GBV) in our country. The recent spate of attacks on women, is truly unsettling and calls for all of us to act.<\/b><\/p>\nI am deliberately and consciously addingmy voice to call for an end to this barbaric and inhumane behaviour. People who resort to violence in an attempt to resolve disagreements have no self-respect, let alone respect of others and the nation at large. This behaviour<\/p>\n
exhibits the cowardice andweakness of its perpetrators, and not, contrary towhatwe hear themsay they believe, the strength they associate with masculinity.<\/p>\n
It needs to end immediately! GBV is a critical societal issue that not only affects the lives and well-being of individuals but also has significant implications for businesses and the overall economy. As a leader in the corporate sector, it ismy responsibility to speak out and take a stand against GBV, and to leverage the resources and influence of our organisation to contribute to the eradication of this problem.<\/p>\n
Troubling<\/p>\n
The statistics on domestic violence in Eswatini are deeply troubling and disproportionately affect women and girls. The Eswatini Demographic and Health Survey reveals that 1 in 3women aged 15-49 reported experiencing physical violence at some point in their lifetime. Additionally, 1 in 5 women in the same age group reported experiencing sexual violence, andmore than half had experienced emotional violence from an intimate partner. These statistics are not just numbers; they represent real people – our colleagues, friends, family members, and community members -who are enduring physical, emotional, and sexual abuse.<\/p>\n
A large share of these episodes of violence culminate in murders that tear at the social fabric of our society. These acts<\/p>\n
reverse gainswe havemade towards socioeconomic development in our communities and leave our nation as a whole much worse off.<\/p>\n
It must stop! The impact of GBV is felt even in the workplace. GBV can have profound effects on employees’ well-being, productivity, and overall work performance. Victims of GBV may struggle with physical and mental health issues, absenteeism, and decreased productivity, all of which can impact the efficiency and success of businesses. In fact, a report by the International Labour Organization (ILO) estimates that GBV costs the global economy an estimated 1.5 trillion USD annually in lost productivity.<\/p>\n
GBV also contributes to a hostile work environment and can negatively affect employee morale, leading to higher turnover rates anddifficultyinattractingtoptalent.Furthermore,<\/p>\n
its repercussions can extend beyond the individual employee, affecting their colleagues and the overall organisational culture. For these reasons, it is imperative for businesses to take a proactive stance in addressing GBV and providing a safe and supportive workplace environment for all employees. The impact of GBV is not isolated to the workplace; it also has broader implications for the economy. GBV undermines the development and progress of our country by perpetuating a cycle of violence and inequality. It disrupts social cohesion, jeopardizes communitywell-being, and hinders the full potential of our country’s human capital. It also creates a climate of fear, insecurity, and instability, ultimately impeding our nation’s ability to thrive and prosper.<\/p>\n
Hands<\/p>\n
As citizens of the Kingdom we need to join hands andcall for and take actions towards putting an end to this scourge. Recognizing the multifaceted impact of GBV, Eswatini Water Services Corporation (EWSC) is committed to driving change and fostering a safe, supportive, and inclusive environment for all employees.We understand that addressing GBV is not only amoral imperative, but also a strategic necessity for the success of our organisation and the country at large. To this end,we have implemented policies and procedures to prevent and respond to GBV within our organisation. Through our wellness programme, we provide training and education to raise awareness among our employees about the prevalence ofGBV, its impact, and the resources available for those who may be affected.<\/p>\n
Wellness<\/p>\n
Due to the fact that our workforce is predominantly male at 70 per cent, our wellness programme prioritises specific interventions aimed at engagingmen and addressing the attitudes and behaviours that contribute to perpetration of violence. This includes discussions on healthy relationships, consent, and respectful communication, challenging harmful stereotypes and promoting positive behaviours and attitudes. By promoting positive masculinity, we believewe are playing a significant role in preventing GBV and fostering a safer and more inclusive<\/p>\n
workplace environment.<\/p>\n
We have also established confidential reporting m e c h a n i s m s through our wellnessboffice and support services for employees who may be experiencing GBV,andsupport programmes for employees who may be strugglingwith angermanagement, stress, or other issues that could contribute to violent behaviour.<\/p>\n
We recognise that the workplace can be a critical point of access for survivors and perpetrators seeking assistance.<\/p>\n
In addition to internal efforts, we are also dedicated to working with local and national stakeholders to address GBV in the broader community as part of our Corporate Social Responsibility. We believe that collaboration with other businesses, government,<\/p>\n
non-governmental organisations, and civil society is essential for creating sustainable change andmobilising resources to combat GBV.<\/p>\n
As the Managing Director of EWSC, I am committed to standing against GBV and using my influence, and voice to contribute to the eradication of this pervasive issue. I urge my fellow business leaders to join in this critical effort, recognizing that addressing GBV is not only amoral imperative, but also a strategic imperative for the success andwell-being of our employees, our businesses, and our nation.<\/p>\n
Together, we can create a future where GBV is no longer tolerated and where all individuals have the opportunity to thrive and contribute to a prosperous Eswatini.<\/p>\n
