The head teacher, Musa Hleta, was said to have been first attacked while in his office. It was claimed that the head teacher, while engaging in his duties, was accosted by the teacher, who communicated that he wanted to engage him (head teacher) on a number of issues. It was gathered that, while the teacher was in Hleta\u2019s office, he questioned him of supposedly using derogatory words when referring to him while in the presence of pupils.<\/p>\n

Refused<\/b><\/p>\n

The teacher was said to have refused to take a seat while engaging the head teacher. He was alleged to have ordered Hleta to stand in a corner so that they could engage. Thereafter, an altercation reportedly ensued, which resulted in other staff members taking note of what was happening. According to sources, thereon, two senior members of the staff were said to have intervened and escorted the teacher out of the head teachers\u2019 office and was taken to the staffroom, where he supposedly continued to express his discontent with his colleagues\u2019 actions.<\/p>\n

After a while, it was gathered that female teachers were heard wailing inyandzaleyo, which is a siSwati phrase calling for help in the face of danger. The female teachers are said to have advised Hleta to exit his office, as their colleague was about to stab him. Sources claimed that before Hleta could exit his office, the teacher had returned.<\/p>\n

This time, the educator was said to have been wielding a knife, threatening to stab the head teacher. It was said Hleta was able to exit the office; however, the teacher continued to pursue him and he (head teacher) had to run around cars, evading being stabbed. Hleta was also said to have been seen running in the school yard, with the teacher in pursuit. The commotion caused was said to have drawn the attention of the pupils, who were sitting their final examinations, such that some of them exited their classrooms to watch the rare occurrence. Sources claimed that the pupils also started wailing inyandzaleyo!<\/p>\n

Hleta reportedly sped towards the school gate, which he supposedly closed. It was said while closing the gate and pulling it to ensure that the teacher did not exit the school yard, the teacher supposedly continued trying to stab him. Seeing that he was losing the battle, Hleta was said to have fled to traffic police officers, who were manning a roadblock about 300 metres from the school gate. They assisted Hleta and transported him to Ngculwini Police Post, where he recorded a statement. According to sources, the police body-searched the teacher and found that he was still carrying the knife, which they reportedly confiscated.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Hleta confirmed the incident and expressed concern over what he termed abuse of his cadre in schools. The head teacher said the experience was traumatic. He said: \u201cI reported the matter to the office of the REO (regional education officer) as it was traumatic and something that shall linger on in the minds of the learners and teachers.\u201d The REO, Sizwe Kunene, confirmed that the matter was reported to his office. He said the matter was handed over to the police, as it involved violence and they were investigating it. Deputy Police Information and Communications Officer Inspector Nosipho Mnguni, confirmed the matter. She said it was reported to the police last Friday.<\/p>\n
