Africa-Press – Eswatini. <\/strong><\/span>Sin-bins are set to be introduced to football after the sport\u2019s lawmakers approved the decision to trial what could prove to be a revolutionary move.<\/b><\/p>\n

The International Football Association Board (IFAB) is said to have agreed to trial the rugby-style approach in elite-level competitions. This trial could take place as soon as next season.<\/p>\n

Severe<\/b><\/p>\n

The penalty box or sin-bin is the area in ice hockey, rugby union, roller derby and some other sports where a player sits to serve the time of a given penalty, for an offence not severe enough to merit outright expulsion from the contest. During the 2017\/18 season, sin-bins were successfully trialled abroad before being rolled out across 31 leagues throughout the 2018\/19 season as part of their pledge to improve the match day experience.<\/p>\n

According to international media reports, they have proved to be successful in tackling dissent for many years at grassroots and youth levels and the new trials could also see them geeting used to punishing tactical fouling. \u201cShould players fall guilty of breaking these rules, then they would be brandished an \u2018orange card\u2019 as part of the new shake up,\u201d reported the Telegraph from the United Kingdom. As per The Telegraph, the orange card would be used for offences deemed worthy of greater punishment than a booking in order to reduce the number of tactical fouls and other punishments during a game.<\/p>\n

Earlier this month, Lukas Brud, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of IFAB, told The Times: \u201cWe have identified participant misbehaviour as a major problem for football and it will be the main topic for IFAB for the upcoming years. We are looking at what we can do either via the Laws of the Game or recommendations and guidelines for additional measures. Sin-bins for dissent have worked well in grassroots football, and some believe these could also be tested at a higher level, with trials in more senior football,\u201d reads the report. \u201cPlayers may not worry so much about getting a yellow card for saying something inappropriate to a referee, but it can make a big difference if they know it means a tenth of the match off the pitch.\u201d<\/p>\n

Eswatini Football Association (EFA) Marketing and Communications Officer Muzi Radebe said his office was yet to get an official correspondence from the international football office on the proposed changes.<\/p>\n
