Africa-Press – Eswatini. <\/strong><\/span>The schisms within the mass democratic movement have a huge potential of throwing the democratization project of the country into disarray.<\/b><\/p>\n

Being a firm believer in the need and possibility of a democratic Eswatini, I am also not under the illusion that transformation from the feudalistic and unworkable Tinkhundla System will come magically. It will be a product of painful toil and sacrifices of emaSwati who share the belief that we deserve better than what is forced down our throats. Already, countless sacrifices have been made in the form of lost lives, amputated limbs and disruptions of livelihoods, to mention a few examples. The regime, in its quest to hold on to power and enforce an ideology that has no place in modern politics, continues to expose its brutality and aversion to engage in any form of dialogue for a lasting solution to be found.<\/p>\n

Grip<\/b><\/p>\n

The sheer thought of losing its grip to some critical levers of power, which will be a by-product of any meaningful tradeoff as part of the concessions, makes its proponents shake in their boots. It is difficult for them to imagine any setup that may likely import some tenets that are best kept as theories for them. These include, among others, the idea of accountability, transparency, inclusiveness and prudence in the use of State resources. While it serves them and their insatiable appetite for luxury, they will fight tooth and nail to preserve the status quo and continue to milk this cow until it collapses. This cannot go on any longer and emaSwati have expressed that. The Sibaya smokescreen has proven once again how much we do not believe in dialogue. The transformation to a better trajectory, as history teaches us, is always led. No struggle for political freedom happens by chance. It is a product of actions of motive forces that give the line of march and know how to act when the balance of forces favours the change. In our case, emaSwati look up to the mass democratic movement for direction.<\/p>\n

Confidence<\/b><\/p>\n

This includes civil society organisations, political parties, organised labour, the church and the media. If emaSwati do not have confidence in these institutions to show and lead the way, it is easy to lose them back to docility. The events of June 2021 leading to now have raised the political consciousness of many emaSwati to levels never imagined. Many saw the need to find and belong to a political home. New political outfits were born and old ones woke up from their slumber. The choice is now for emaSwati to belong to those which resonate with their aspirations for a better Eswatini. The media has also had to be creative and be relevant to a now very perceptive and captive audience, which is very demanding of what it wants to consume. This is a very critical epoch for the nation and indeed, the struggle for democracy.<\/p>\n

Certain events bring about conditions like these and this wave will not last forever. From where I stand, as I am certain many readers may agree, triggers such as the death of Law student, Thabani Nkomonye under mysterious circumstances, the economic hardships of emaSwati exacerbated and exposed by the COVID-19 pandemic, the healthcare crisis are the sparks of the widespread sentiments of a relook into the kingdom\u2019s political architecture. The violence meted out by the State on unarmed citizens and the revenge attacks form the other side of the political divide cannot be forgotten in this regard. Never have emaSwati been so sure and confident that there is a formidable challenge on the regime. Such opportunities and conditions come and go. Eswatini was in an almost similar position around 1996. That came and went. It was not sustained, however, it did result in some cosmetic changes.<\/p>\n

It has been disheartening to note the waning unity and singleness of purpose within the mass democratic movement as seen in the cracks that have been fuelled by the raging debate of whether or not to participate in the recent national elections. They seem to have crumbled under the resilience of the regime and allowed this to divide them. Petty politicking, bickering, power struggles and indecisiveness have characterised these forces in recent times. Bread and butter issues have successfully weakened organised labour, while political parties have struggled to gel and find common ground in giving emaSwati a line of march.<\/p>\n

The overwhelming majority of emaSwati, with all due respect, are not exactly sophisticated politically. They only need to have confidence in a better tomorrow and that the people at the forefront are decisive and know what they are doing. Statements attributed to the government spokesperson to the effect that the political outfits are in ICU are unfortunately true, whether they are willing to admit it or not. If no genuine attempts are taken to find each other and regroup, this generation\u2019s hopes of plurality in politics will be up in smoke.<\/p>\n
