Africa-Press – Eswatini. <\/strong><\/span>Their Majesties have congratulated the Republic of China (Taiwan) President-elect William Lai Ching from the governing Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) for winning the presidential election held on Saturday.<\/b><\/p>\n

On behalf of His Majesty, King Mswati III, Her Majesty the Queen Mother and the country, Prime Minister Russel Dlamini said Eswatini remains confident that under the leadership of President Lai, the Republic of China (Taiwan) will continue to flourish and maintain the peace and stability it has always enjoyed.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn joining the Taiwanese nation in the joy of this happy occasion, we express our firm belief that the cordial relations which happily exist between our nations will continue to be enhanced and strengthened for the benefit of our peoples,\u201d the PM said on Saturday in a statement.<\/p>\n

Lai, the current vice-president, was in a three-way race with Hou Yu-ih from the conservative Kuomintang (KMT) and former Taipei Mayor Ko Wen-je from the Taiwan People\u2019s Party (TPP), which was only founded in 2019.<\/p>\n

Lai took 40.2% of the votes cast, according to results from the Central Election Commission on Saturday. Opponent Hou conceded defeat and congratulated Lai on his victory. He also apologised to KMT supporters for not being able to remove the DPP. Ko also conceded defeat.<\/p>\n

\u201cI want to thank the Taiwanese people for writing a new chapter in our democracy,\u201d Lai said in a victory speech where he thanked his two opponents for conceding. \u201cWe are telling the international community that between democracy and authoritarianism, we will stand on the side of democracy.\u201d<\/p>\n

He added that he hoped for a return to \u201chealthy and orderly\u201d exchanges with China, reiterating his desire for talks based on dignity and parity. The electoral results were counted from 98% of polling stations across the island, according to the commission tally, which also showed that Hou had trailed with 33.4% of the vote.<\/p>\n

Taiwan President-elect William Lai Ching<\/p>\n

Voters also elected politicians to Taiwan\u2019s 113-seat legislature in elections closely watched by China and the United States. Taiwan\u2019s elections carry an outsized importance because of the territory\u2019s disputed political status. While self-governing since the 1940s, China still claims the island and its outlying territories and has not ruled out the use of force to achieve its ambitions.<\/p>\n

In the run-up to the polls, China denounced Lai as a dangerous separatist, said he would be a threat to peace in the region if he won, and called the elections a choice between \u201cpeace and war\u201d.<\/p>\n

In his victory speech, Lai said the self-governed island had managed to see off attempts to influence the vote, in an apparent swipe at China. \u201cThe Taiwanese people have successfully resisted efforts from external forces to influence this election,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Lai has maintained that he is committed to peace and open to conditional engagement with Beijing, while also boosting the island\u2019s defences.<\/p>\n

But he also promised \u201cto safeguard Taiwan from continuing threat and intimidation from China\u201d.<\/p>\n

China has stepped up military pressure on Taiwan in recent years, periodically stoking worries about a potential invasion. Chinese President Xi Jinping said in a recent New Year\u2019s address the \u201cunification\u201d of Taiwan with China was \u201cinevitable\u201d.<\/p>\n

The DPP has been in power for the past eight years under President Tsai Ing-wen. Some 19.5 million people aged 20 and over were eligible to vote, and voter turnout was expected to be high based on public transit data.<\/p>\n

Taiwanese are required to return to the location of their household registration \u2013 typically their hometown \u2013 to vote in person, which means the leadup to elections is a busy time for the island-wide rail service.<\/p>\n

On Friday, the Taiwan Railway Administration predicted a record 758,000 in ticket sales, higher than any previous election. The European Union \u201cwelcomed\u201d Taiwan\u2019s presidential election and congratulated all the voters who participated in \u201cthis democratic exercise\u201d, a statement said, without mentioning the president-elect.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe EU remains concerned about growing tensions in the Taiwan Strait and opposes any unilateral attempt to change the status quo,\u201d the statement by a spokesperson for EU diplomatic chief Josep Borrell said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe European Union underlines that peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait are key to regional and global security and prosperity.\u201d<\/p>\n

Japan congratulated the smooth implementation of the democratic election and Lai on his victory.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe expect that the issue surrounding Taiwan will be resolved peacefully through dialogue, thereby contributing to the peace and stability in the region,\u201d it said in a statement, adding that Taiwan was an \u201cextremely crucial partner\u201d with whom Tokyo aimed to \u201cdeepen cooperation.\u201d<\/p>\n
