Africa-Press – Eswatini. <\/strong><\/span>The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) of South Africa has introduced an online voter registration portal for the 2024 National and Provincial Elections (NPE 2024).<\/b><\/p>\n

This marks the first time that South African citizens residing abroad can conveniently apply for registration through the dedicated portal or by scanning a QR code, streamlining the electoral process.<\/p>\n

In a media statement released by the South African High Commission in the country it was stated that citizens outside South Africa will use the QR code from the IEC, making registration accessible with just a click. Additionally, the South African High Commission in Mbabane will open its doors on January 27 and 28, to provide in-person assistance with registration.<\/p>\n

It will be open from 08:00 until 17:00 on both days. Two South African officials, appointed as special voting officers (SVO), will be present at the South African High Commission during the weekend to assist citizens with the registration process.<\/p>\n

The High Commission disclosed that it was essential for those intending to register online or at the High Commission to bring along their South African identity book, temporary ID, or ID card along with their passport.<\/p>\n

South Africans who have already registered within the country are encouraged not to register again through the Mbabane High Commission, emphasising the efficiency and accuracy of the electoral system.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis move towards online registration reflects a progressive step in embracing technology to enhance citizen participation in the democratic process.\u201d According to the High Commission, in accordance with the South African Electoral Act 73 of 1998 and subsequent Regulations, provision is made for citizens of the Republic of South Africa, who are outside the borders of the Republic of South Africa to register to vote and to vote at South African missions abroad.<\/p>\n
