Africa-Press – Eswatini. <\/strong><\/span>Government has cleared the air following the drainage system challenges experienced at a waterlogged Somhlolo National Stadium pitch.<\/b><\/p>\n

This was during the Ingwenyama Cup final game between Mbabane Swallows and Green Mamba, where the latter emerged victorious with a 1-0 win, claiming the E1.4 million first prize. The tightly-contested game was hindered by a waterlogged pitch due to two days of heavy rainfall. It\u2019s noteworthy that this is the first time Somhlolo National Stadium has experienced such challenges since its reopening for major football events like the Ingwenyama Cup, following four years of ongoing renovations. Previously, tractors were used to remove water from the pitch when faced with waterlogging.<\/p>\n

Firstly, it is crucial to remember that the Somhlolo National Stadium pitch was certified by FIFA (Federation of International Football Associations) and has a well-equipped, modern drainage system. As such, we no longer use tractors which were employed when the stadium didn\u2019t have a drainage system,\u201d said Ministry of Sports, Culture and Youth Affairs Communications Officer Sibongiseni Zondi.<\/p>\n

Zondi also emphasised the impact of consistent downpour on football pitches globally, highlighting that the match officials ultimately determined the playability of the pitch. \u201cThe fact that the water did not submerge the turf means the water was being drained away as expected. However, this was delayed by the continuous downpour. Lastly, it is match officials who make decisions on whether a pitch is waterlogged beyond a playable condition or not, and the match going ahead on Sunday is an indication that the match officials found the pitch to be usable under the circumstances,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
