Africa-Press – Eswatini. <\/strong><\/span>Government is now aware of the people who leaked the Eswatini Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) documents, which exposed alleged corruption in the country, Prime Minister (PM) Russell Dlamini said.<\/b><\/p>\n

He said the documents were leaked two years ago and government had \u2018a very good lead\u2019 on who is behind it, as well as the reasons. The leaks he was referring to were documents alleging that Eswatini\u2019s mineral resources and money were being laundered by foreign elements operating businesses in Eswatini, with help from some emaSwati. The International Consortium of Investigative Journalists said it had over 890 000 internal records, which were allegedly evidence of money laundering in Eswatini. The PM told editors yesterday that he could not speak further on the issue, in fear that his statements could jeopardise investigations.<\/p>\n

\u201cGovernment is now aware of those who leaked the documents. We have a very good lead on those behind the leaks. If I can say anything further, it would jeopardise investigations, but, I can say we are on top of our investigations.\u201d On whether the leaks caused problems for the country, the PM said the answer was yes and no. \u201cInstead of these leaks stopping investors from coming to the country, the investors should actually draw confidence from the fact that every transaction is traced. The leaks were meant to destroy the reputation of the country, but this has proved the direct opposite. The unit is still a fit and capable institution,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
