Africa-Press – Eswatini. <\/strong><\/span>The nation is gearing up for one of its most colourful and revered traditional ceremonies, the Umhlanga Reed Dance, as His Majesty King Mswati III has officially declared Monday, 8 September 2025 a public holiday in honour of the annual event.<\/b><\/p>\n

This announcement brings excitement and anticipation across the Kingdom, as thousands of young maidens, known as imbali, prepare to take part in this deeply cultural celebration that showcases Eswatini\u2019s rich heritage, unity, and pride.<\/p>\n

A Living Tradition of Grace and Unity<\/p>\n

The Umhlanga Ceremony is an eight-day cultural rite where unmarried and childless Swazi girls and young women gather reeds and present them to the Queen Mother at Ludzidzini Royal Residence. The reeds are symbolically used to repair the royal windbreak, a traditional enclosure that reflects the protection and strength of the monarchy.<\/p>\n

Over 100 000 maidens from all corners of the Kingdom are expected to converge at Ludzidzini, adorned in traditional attire rich with vibrant colours, beadwork, and handcrafted accessories. Their synchronized dancing and joyful singing will once again remind the world of Eswatini\u2019s strong cultural identity and commitment to preserving values of respect, purity, and patriotism.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is not just a dance, it is a reflection of who we are as Emaswati,\u201d said one community elder in Lobamba. \u201cIt teaches our young girls to take pride in their roots and remain connected to our nation\u2019s values.\u201d<\/p>\n

Honouring the Past, Celebrating the Present<\/p>\n

Last year, the Umhlanga holiday was observed on Monday, 2 September 2024, drawing large crowds of local and international guests who witnessed the cultural splendour firsthand. The ceremony continues to be a highlight on the national calendar and a source of admiration beyond Eswatini\u2019s borders.<\/p>\n

By declaring 8 September a public holiday this year, His Majesty once again demonstrates a commitment to preserving and elevating national traditions that bind Emaswati together in spirit and purpose.<\/p>\n
