Africa-Press – Eswatini. <\/strong><\/span>These encouraging words were directed to Swazi National High School (SNHS) pupils by the Deputy Prime Minister Themba Masuku.<\/b><\/p>\n

He said the pupils were heroes by refusing to engage in a riot and burning their school when outsiders tried to infiltrate their school last year. Sharing the same sentiments was the Minister of Education and Training Lady Howard -Mabuza who said SNHS pupils had a special place in her heart, although she did not state her reasons.<\/p>\n

Masuku said it was for this reason that he chose to celebrate the Day of the African Child with the pupils and allowed them to ask him anything.<\/p>\n

This year\u2019s localised theme of the Day of the African Child is, \u2018Eliminating All Forms of Violence against Children in Eswatini: Our Collective Responsibility.\u2019 The DPM expressed how proud he was of the SNHS pupils when he was speaking about how all learners should not allow their future to be destroyed by anyone.<\/p>\n

He made reference to the spate of destruction of schools that plagued the country in 2021, which he said is violence of another order as it deprives the learners the opportunity to access education. In February 2021, pupils from SNHS did the unthinkable when they refused to join a protest action that many of their peers all over the country were part of.<\/p>\n

It was reported that a group of students from the University of Eswatini who were protesting following the arrest of Swaziland National Union of Students (SNUS) President Colani Maseko, stormed the school and disrupted lessons in an effort to recruit the pupils to take part in a protest action.<\/p>\n

Instead of joining the protest, the SNHS pupils told the students that they were not willing to join the strike action as they wanted to learn in order to make it to university, just like them.<\/p>\n

The DPM said this was heroic of the resistant pupils who protected their school, and for it, he personally thanked the learners.<\/p>\n

He tried to get the group of boys who were seen in a video turning away the university students, but he changed his mind in fear that the young heroes would be targeted and victimised.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat you did will serve you in the future when you become professionals in different fields,\u201d stated Masuku.<\/p>\n

He also encouraged the learners to remain focused on their studies despite whatever challenges they may face in their young lives.<\/p>\n
