Africa-Press – Eswatini. <\/strong><\/span>Minister of Finance Neal Rijkenberg has unveiled a package of VAT adjustments designed to ease the cost of living for emaSwati, with a special focus on health, hygiene, and everyday household needs. Beginning 1 January, several essential items will become VAT-free, resulting in lower prices nationwide. These include syringes, gauze, surgical tissues, bandages, and other medical supplies that previously carried VAT but are now recognised as necessities that must be made more accessible.<\/b><\/p>\n

Women and girls also stand to benefit from the removal of VAT on sanitary pads, sanitary towels, and tampons, a move expected to reduce the cost of these critical products and support menstrual dignity. Reusable nappies will also become more affordable following their removal from the VAT list.<\/p>\n

Fresh millis are among the goods that will see a price drop, while condensed milk becomes VAT-applicable, slightly increasing its cost. The Minister emphasised that these adjustments are aimed at helping low-income households manage basic expenses.<\/p>\n

Rijkenberg also addressed December salary expectations for civil servants, noting that government cash flow constraints prevent early payments this year. Salaries will be processed on the standard 20 December cycle, with daily-paid staff receiving theirs on 23 December. However, the Minister offered positive news: January salaries will be paid early to help families prepare for school reopening.<\/p>\n

The Minister further announced the appointment of Ms. Kangezuo Mabuza as the substantive CEO of SMVA, where she is expected to stabilise operations and strengthen service delivery.<\/p>\n

Overall, the VAT changes highlight government\u2019s commitment to easing household burdens while improving public service efficiency, supporting a broader strategy to uplift families and ensure fair access to essential goods across the country.<\/p>\n
