Africa-Press – Eswatini. <\/strong><\/span>Eswatini\u2019s financial sector is showing encouraging signs of resilience and strengthening stability, with systemic risks easing and banks maintaining strong capital buffers.<\/b><\/p>\n

This was said by Central Bank of Eswatini (CBE) Governor Dr Phil Mnisi at the 2025 Financial Stability Review presentation held at the CBE Complex on Monday, 8 December 2025.<\/p>\n

Presenting the latest assessment, Dr Mnisi described the Financial Stability Review as a critical tool in safeguarding the country\u2019s financial architecture.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Review provides an objective and forward-looking assessment of system-wide risks, institutional strength and emerging vulnerabilities,\u201d he said, adding that it plays a vital role in reinforcing confidence in the financial system.<\/p>\n

A key highlight from the Review was the improvement in the Aggregated Financial Stability Index (AFSI), the country\u2019s main indicator for overall financial sector risk. The index declined from 0.35 in June 2024 to 0.32 in June 2025, signalling a modest but meaningful reduction in systemic risk.<\/p>\n

According to the Governor, this positive movement was supported by firmer external economic conditions, successfully contained inflation, steady growth in public deposits, and the continued maintenance of strong capital and liquidity buffers by local banks.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe banking sector remains well-capitalised and highly liquid, placing it in a strong position to absorb potential economic shocks,\u201d Dr Mnisi confirmed.<\/p>\n

Further reinforcing financial stability has been the moderation of inflationary pressures. Headline inflation averaged 3.5 percent in the first half of 2025, down from 4.3 percent in 2024. As a result, the Central Bank has revised its short-term inflation forecast downwards, citing lower food prices, a strengthening exchange rate and stable global oil prices as the main contributing factors.<\/p>\n

Public confidence in the financial system remains robust. Total deposits grew by 3.8 percent to reach E21.8 billion, while overall banking sector assets increased by 4.9 percent to E30.3 billion, reflecting continued trust by consumers and businesses alike.<\/p>\n

Dr Mnisi also welcomed the recent licensing of two new financial institutions \u2013 Letshego Eswatini Bank and SBS Bank Eswatini. He said their entry into the market is expected to enhance competition, expand access to financial services and provide consumers with greater choice.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a positive step for financial inclusion and for strengthening the competitive landscape of our financial sector,\u201d he noted.<\/p>\n

Asset Quality Remains a Key Focus<\/b><\/p>\n

Despite the largely positive outlook, Dr Mnisi cautioned that some vulnerabilities remain, particularly regarding asset quality.<\/p>\n

\u201cAsset quality remains the primary soundness concern in the banking sector,\u201d he said. The non-performing loan (NPL) ratio rose slightly from 6.7 percent to 7.0 percent, with corporate loans showing more strain than household lending.<\/p>\n

Additional risks include ongoing global economic uncertainty and lingering domestic fiscal pressures. In response, the Central Bank has intensified its monitoring efforts, including strengthening its Systemic Risk Heatmap, an early-warning system that tracks key macroeconomic and banking indicators.<\/p>\n

Dr Mnisi concluded by reassuring the nation that Eswatini\u2019s financial system remains stable and well supported, while emphasising the importance of continued vigilance.<\/p>\n

\u201cStability does not eliminate the need for caution. Sustained monitoring and timely policy action remain essential to safeguarding long-term financial resilience,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
