Africa-Press – Eswatini. <\/strong><\/span>Eswatini\u2019s long-term vision for energy security took another important step forward this week, as Government confirmed that the National Strategic Fuel Reserve facility is expected to be completed by early 2029.<\/b><\/p>\n

The E5.2 billion facility, currently under construction at Phuzumoya in the KaMkhweli Chiefdom under Siphofaneni Inkhundla, is a flagship national infrastructure project designed to strengthen fuel security and protect the country against global supply disruptions. The project received royal blessing in April 2025, marking the beginning of a transformative investment in Eswatini\u2019s energy resilience.<\/p>\n

During the inspection by Minister of Natural Resources and Energy, His Royal Highness Prince Lonkhokhela, assurances were made by Overseas Electrical Engineering (OEE), the contractor responsible for construction, that despite earlier delays in the release of funds, the project remains firmly on schedule and will be completed within a 36-month construction period.<\/p>\n

Prince Lonkhokhela emphasised Government\u2019s commitment to ensuring that Emaswati benefit directly from the project through employment and skills development. He stressed that local participation is a priority and expressed confidence that citizens will play a meaningful role throughout construction and beyond.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis project belongs to the people of Eswatini,\u201d the Minister said. \u201cIt is important that local communities are actively involved and that the economic benefits are felt where the project is located.\u201d<\/p>\n

OEE representative Hein Papentus confirmed that site clearing has already been completed and that full construction work will commence in January 2026. He added that discussions around employment opportunities will also begin at that time, creating further optimism for residents in the surrounding areas.<\/p>\n

Speaking on behalf of the KaMkhweli Umphakatsi, community representative Almond Gwebu welcomed the project, describing it as a positive development that holds the potential to transform livelihoods in Siphofaneni. He expressed hope that the Strategic Fuel Reserve would bring lasting economic opportunities to the area.<\/p>\n

Once completed, the facility will have the capacity to store 80 million litres of fuel, securing a minimum of 60 days of national fuel supply. This strategic stockpile will protect Eswatini from international fuel shortages, price volatility and emergency disruptions, ensuring continuity of economic activity and essential public services.<\/p>\n

The Strategic Fuel Reserve is also expected to generate significant economic benefits. During construction, it has already created employment opportunities and increased demand for local suppliers. Once operational, it will provide skilled jobs in fuel management, engineering, logistics and facility maintenance, contributing to long-term regional development.<\/p>\n

Beyond economic gains, the facility strengthens Eswatini\u2019s strategic position within Southern Africa. In an era of unpredictable global energy markets, maintaining a secure fuel reserve positions the country as resilient, prepared and forward-thinking.<\/p>\n

Prince Lonkhokhela noted that the project forms a critical pillar of Government\u2019s broader energy strategy, complementing ongoing investments in renewable energy while recognising fuel\u2019s continued importance to transport, agriculture and industry.<\/p>\n

The Phuzumoya inspection underscored Eswatini\u2019s proactive approach to national planning, infrastructure development and energy independence. Once operational, the Strategic Fuel Reserve will stand as a symbol of foresight, resilience and national unity, securing the country\u2019s fuel supply while supporting sustainable economic growth for years to come.<\/p>\n
