The workshop, hosted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation at Happy Valley Hotel, seeks to educate legislators on the key features of the instruments under consideration.<\/p>\n<p>The discussions are expected to cover about 22 treaties, as part of preparations for a joint sitting of the two Chambers of Parliament, which will be convened later in accordance with Section 238 of the Constitution to consider ratification.<\/p>\n<p>Deputy Prime Minister Thulisile Dladla, who introduced the African Union Charter for Older Persons Protocol and the African Disability Protocol, said the instruments are crucial in strengthening legal frameworks that promote dignity, inclusion and social protection.<\/p>\n<p>She said although Africa is largely youthful, the continent must not overlook older persons, who remain custodians of culture, language and tradition, adding that many continue to face neglect, discrimination and limited access to essential services.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor Eswatini, ratification is of particular importance. Our elders are custodians of culture, language, and tradition. Ratifying this protocol will strengthen frameworks for social protection, healthcare, and community support,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Her remarks echoed the message delivered by His Majesty King Mswati III during the Speech from the Throne, where he stressed the importance of caring for the elderly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery country has an obligation to care for its elderly citizens, ensuring they are loved and cared for in appreciation of all the sacrifices they have made. They should depart this earth with their hearts content that their efforts were worthwhile,\u201d His Majesty said.<\/p>\n<p>Dladla added that ratification would also align Eswatini with continental standards and reinforce the country\u2019s commitment to human rights under the African Union Agenda 2063. She emphasized that ageing with dignity is a fundamental human right and an important element in building cohesive communities.<\/p>\n<p>The Deputy Prime Minister also highlighted the African Disability Protocol, adopted in 2018 and in force since 2024, as a key instrument to advance the rights of persons with disabilities.
