We will soon be able to rely on reinforcements from two Canadair aircraft from Croatia, two Air Tractor aircraft from Portugal, as well as two Black Hawk helicopters from the Czech Republic and Slovakia.”

French officials previously stated that authorities evacuated more than 10,000 people overnight in southwestern France after a massive and rapidly spreading fire engulfed at least 6,000 acres of land west of Bordeaux.

Spain Declares National Emergency

Spain declared a national emergency last Thursday in the Madrid region and the nearby province of Ávila following out-of-control wildfires. This measure, announced by the Ministry of the Interior, aims to expedite resource mobilization to combat the fires and places the responsibility for managing the crisis in the hands of a military emergency unit.

More than 10,000 people have been evacuated in recent days from various parts of the Madrid region, where multiple wildfires are burning simultaneously. Spanish authorities ordered 3,500 people to leave their homes in a town west of Madrid on Thursday after the wildfires became uncontrollable.

Media reports from Spain indicate that the fire that broke out Thursday in Ávila is spreading significantly, and residents in the municipalities of Burgohondo, El Tiemblo, and Navaluenga have been ordered to stay indoors.

Local newspaper El País reported that 1,500 people were evacuated from a rural tourism complex and a residential complex in the El Tiemblo area due to the rapid advance of the flames.

The largest fire is raging on the opposite side of Madrid, specifically in the province of Guadalajara, about 100 kilometers north of the capital, where it has consumed 32,000 hectares since it ignited last Thursday.

Rapid Fires in Several Tunisian States

In North Africa, fires broke out last Thursday in the forests of Jebel Tawila in the Kef governorate of Tunisia, amid a wave of wildfires affecting several Tunisian regions during this period of extreme heat.

Videos released by the official television showed a rapid spread of flames in the forests located in the Nabeur delegation of the governorate, while thick clouds of smoke rose over the area.

Most regions of the country have been experiencing record temperatures for about two weeks, approaching 50 degrees Celsius, with dry winds exacerbating the fires in many highlands and forests. Just a day prior, fires consumed vast areas of Jebel Nazour in the Bizerte governorate in the north of the country, where firefighting teams and military units worked for about 16 hours before gaining control.

In the last 24 hours, firefighting teams intervened to extinguish 296 fires, according to data released by civil protection authorities.

Tunisia loses thousands of hectares of forested areas annually due to wildfires and rising temperatures under the pressure of climate change.

Algeria Controls Most Fires in the Country

In Algeria, the Interior Minister stated last Thursday that “all fires posing a threat to residents and property have been controlled, with only a few limited hotspots remaining that firefighting teams continue to extinguish.”

During a visit to the Tlemcen governorate to offer condolences for a wildfire victim in the town of Ouled Maimoun, he confirmed that the situation on the ground has shown “significant improvement” compared to previous days.

He also revealed that Algeria recorded over 160 fires across several governorates from Thursday to Saturday, affecting more than half of some municipalities, affirming that “the situation is now under control.”

Find more news and analyses on Eswatini on the Africa Press website

Africa-Press – Eswatini.
