Africa-Press – Eswatini. <\/strong><\/span>Members of the public have shown a strong interest in the upcoming Tax Indaba being organised by Business Eswatini.<\/b><\/p>\n

The event will take place on July 27 at the Royal Villas. Business Eswatini members are expected to fork out E2 300 for the event while non-members will be expected to pay E3 000.<\/p>\n

Some of the topics to be covered during the indaba include the income tax legislation changes being introduced, from business perspective (Capital Gains Tax, Tax on Worldwide Income, PAYE-36 per cent, Presumptive Tax for MSMEs, Corporate Tax, tax on long term contracts).<\/p>\n

Envisaged<\/b><\/p>\n

According to Business Eswatini, the 10 years of VAT implementation; challenges and opportunities will be discussed.<\/p>\n

Business Eswatini Chief Executive Officer (CEO) E.Nathi Dlamini said due to the appetite for the event they envisaged that the prospects of the event being oversubscribed was real, hence the need for delegates to book their seats early so as to secure a seat.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe forum will discuss the tax regime of Eswatini and how it impacts both small and big businesses,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Dlamini said the indaba would educate and sensitise the business community on developments in the tax administration landscape and to raise the business community\u2019s awareness and knowledge on prevailing tax issues.<\/p>\n

He said the Eswatini Revenue Services, ministry of finance and the Revenue Appeals Tribunal Eswatini would be involved in order for them to pick up the issues first-hand and respond to questions from participants.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe response from the business community has been resounding, which clearly indicates the appetite the market has for tax matters. Some businesses have even opted to close shop due to tax issues,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

He added that the print media had in recent times, featured stories about companies with huge tax bills, most of which threatened the existence of those businesses therefore BE confirmed that there were many of her members who had approached their office to register their pains around the subject of tax.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe resultant establishment of the Revenue Appeals Tribunal is also as a result of the protracted disputes and will hopefully resolve these disputes leading to a healthy tax climate in order for businesses to ably and happily pay their taxes,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Interest<\/b><\/p>\n

Dlamini said it was very important for investment retention and attraction hence the event had drawn interest from participants even beyond the borders of Eswatini.<\/p>\n

\u201cPaul Friedlander who resides in the USA was also quoted saying \u2018conducive markets will always attract local and foreign direct investments projects that create quality jobs\u2019. The tax regime is a critical component of the attractiveness of an investment destination. Eswatini is well-positioned to exploit this opportunity,\u201d he added. Dlamini concluded by saying it would be interesting to see the outcomes of the engagement given the latest trends in the form of escalating prices of basic commodities.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis erodes the purchasing power of consumers at a time when businesses are not performing optimally to compensate for the income gaps caused by this trend. Conversely, there is also a huge need for improved service delivery from government, which relies on tax to provide such services,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Subscriptions<\/b><\/p>\n

Explaining the registration fees Business Eswatini pointed out that the fees involved were to merely defray the costs incurred in the process of hosting the event, the speakers, and most importantly, the expert opinion that will be unpacked at the event. According to Business Eswatini that was very costly, running in the region of a few hundreds of thousands Emalangeni.<\/p>\n

\u201cBusiness Ewatini members pay subscriptions for such services, hence they pay a nominal fee compared to non-members; and Business Eswatini comprises both the ‘corporates’ and small businesses. Even laundries are part of Business Eswatini.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo, the collective sentiment of big and small is incorporated as there cannot be big business without small business,\u201d the organisation stated. Business Eswatini further highlighted that as an organisation they had already sponsored a few very small businesses to attend that are familiar with the pains and challenges of the wider sector of small business.<\/p>\n
