Africa-Press – Eswatini. <\/strong><\/span>Members of Parliament (MPs) want government to lift the wearing of masks in public and emulate South Africa.<\/b><\/p>\n

This was said during the Ministry of Health portfolio committee debate, which took place in Senate yesterday. Although the legislators did not outrightly state that the country should follow suit like South Africa, it is a known that the neighbouring country recently lifted the wearing of masks over a fortnight ago. First to make his submission on the removal of wearing of masks in public places was Manzini North MP Macford Sibandze, who put it to the House that it had been a norm that the kingdom emulated neighbouring countries such that they had been used to it. He said it was about two to three weeks since the neighbouring country lifted the wearing of masks in their country. Sibandze mentioned that most of the time when travelling at the airport, they were advised to remove masks.<\/p>\n

However, he said they were warned to wear them when they got to the other part of certain destinations. \u201cSo I think Cabinet, with the guidance of the minister, should hasten in this regard because we visit constituency centres timeously and we find that people in communities are being proactive, the majority is no longer wearing masks,\u201d the MP said. Sibandze implored the minister\u2019s guidance in ensuring the removal of wearing masks. On another note, the MP highlighted that the minister had explicitly stated in her preamble, that the core business of the ministry was quality health for all.<\/p>\n

He pointed out that it was compromised by lack of medication in health facilities. Sibandze added that the lack of quality health predominantly affected the poorest in society. Motshane MP Robert Magongo said people were tired of masks. He said neighbouring countries had disregarded them and questioned why Eswatini shouldn\u2019t follow suit.<\/p>\n
