Africa-Press – Eswatini. <\/strong><\/span>Minister of Labour and Social Security Phila Buthelezi says the ministry is considering reverting to paying students allowances once off in order to avoid strikes.<\/b><\/p>\n

The minister mentioned this during the debate of the ministry\u2019s first quarter performance report last week.<\/p>\n

He was responding to questions raised by MPs on what the ministry was doing to resolve the ever occurring strikes by students over the late payment of allowances.<\/p>\n

Nhlambeni MP Manzi Zwane said what was happening to the students was a cause for concern. He mentioned that some students committed suicide due to the delayed payment of allowances by government.<\/p>\n

\u2018The challenges faced by the students are well known to the minister. in the past, he said there were not many strikes because students had received their allowance once off. He said the decision to change and pay allowances on a monthly basis was one of the reasons there were too many protests by students.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is evident that the new system is not working, does the ministry consider reverting to the old system of paying allowances once off. The ministry should also consider handing over the responsibility to the ministry of education,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Sithobelweni MP Bhekitje Dlamini urged the ministry to speed up the establishment of the scholarship fund. He said it would be beneficial for government to establish the fund so that the funds were readily available for the payment of scholarships and allowances.<\/p>\n

Dlamini said this would go a long way towards addressing the challenges faced by students who resorted to protesting due to late payment of allowances.<\/p>\n

Manzini North MP Macford Sibandze urged the minister to review the scholarship policy.<\/p>\n

He said the minister should engage companies to assist government in footing the bill for scholarships. He also mentioned that the ministry should consider establishing the scholarship funds so that those recovered did not go to the consolidated ones.<\/p>\n

Kumethula MP Derrick Masuku said he was aware of the challenges faced by government as there were no funds available. He however mentioned that some students did not have any financial support from home and depended on the allowances paid by government.<\/p>\n

Ndzingeni MP Lutfo Dlamini urged the minister to take a political decision and establish a stand-alone scholarship fund. He said the funds collected from former students would go a long way towards addressing the challenges faced by government.<\/p>\n

In response, Minister Buthelezi welcomed the MPs submissions and said he was hopeful that the scholarship fund would be established soon. He also mentioned that the ministry was considering reverting to the old system of paying allowances. He said in the past, there were not as many protests by students because they used to receive their allowances once off. \u201cWe are considering going back to paying allowances once off while we finalise the establishment of the scholarship fund,\u201d he said. Buthelezi also said the ministry was still paying allowances for the past financial year and needed about E241 million for the current allowances and an additional E133 million for new students who will enroll this year.<\/p>\n
