Africa-Press – Eswatini. <\/strong><\/span>Five years later, employees within the country\u2019s transport industry will finally get a salary increase of 15.6 per cent.<\/b><\/p>\n

In terms of the Regulation of Wages Order notice for 2022 dated June 16, which has been seen by Eswatini Observer, it has been revealed that employers will be expected to pay 15.6 per cent more at a date yet to be announced when the ministry of labour and social security publishes the gazette.<\/p>\n

Independent calculations by Eswatini Observer based on the minimum salary stipulated in the 2017 gazette shows that conductors will earn a monthly salary of E1 924.28, when the 15.6 per cent raise gets included into the salary, which had been E1 664.60 since the last increment in 2017.<\/p>\n

This effectively means the salary of a conductor will increase by E259.68.<\/p>\n

For drivers of public service vehicles (PSV) which carry one to 16 passengers, the salary will increase by E370.32 to E2 744.34 from E2 372.00.<\/p>\n

According to the draft regulations approved by Minister of Labour and Social Security, Phila Buthelezi, after a series of meetings with the wages council, drivers of PSVs, which carry between 17 and 36 passengers will now be paid E2 934.62 from E2 538.60, indicating a raise of E396.02.<\/p>\n

The employers whose drivers carry between 37 and 59 passengers will now be expected to fork out E3 040.28 from E2 630, which shows an improvement of E410.28<\/p>\n

For drivers whose PSVs ferry 60 passengers or more, the salary will improve to E3 155.88 from E2 730, an increase of E425.<\/p>\n

The notice also states that transport operators, which service courier or goods, the highest raise will be for driver instructors who could soon be paid E6 030.16 from E5 216.40.<\/p>\n

Increased<\/p>\n

The instructors have had their salaries increased by E813.76.<\/p>\n

Lorry mates and loaders will have their salaries increased by E281.58 from E1 805 to E2 086.58.<\/p>\n

The hike in salaries comes in the wake of news to the effect that commuters could heave a sigh of relief for now as public transport operators decided not to negotiate for fares to increase following the fuel hike.<\/p>\n

Instead, they called upon government to reduce fuel tax by 50 per cent and to remove the Sincephetelo Motor Vehicle Accidents Fund (SMVAF) fuel levy.<\/p>\n

They said this would ensure that the price of a litre of fuel remained below E20.<\/p>\n

Public transport operators threatened government that if it failed to respond swiftly, they would shut-down all bus ranks.<\/p>\n

Resolved<\/b><\/p>\n

Chairman of Buses Association, Duma Msibi, in an earlier meeting said the fuel hike was a very sensitive matter, which would not be resolved overnight following the ongoing war between Ukraine and Russia. He said given the ongoing war between the two countries, it appeared that the situation was far from over.<\/p>\n

He said, therefore, it was very significant for them to come up with an immediate, yet long lasting solution, which would rectify their plight.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf we can work in unity, we can come up with a long lasting solution,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

He said the long lasting solution was none other than lobbying for government to reduce fuel tax by 50 per cent and to remove the SMVA fuel levy once and for all.<\/p>\n

Msibi said government had taxed the nation for a long time and it was now time for it to reduce taxes on fuel by 50 per cent and also remove the SMVA fuel levy. He said by so doing, the fuel would decrease.<\/p>\n

He said reducing these taxes would solve the fuel crisis as the price would be reduced to E16 per litre. Msibi said it was now difficult for their customers to budget for groceries following the incessant hike of commodities.<\/p>\n

He stated that it was for this reason that they decided not to hike the bus fare this time around, but rather lobby for government to take responsibility.<\/p>\n
