Africa-Press – Ethiopia. China- Africa Vocational Education Alliance Director-General Mark Gong said his country is working in collaboration with Ethiopia to comprehensively improve the TVET system in Ethiopia.

In an exclusive interview with ENA, the director-general said China is working in collaboration with African countries, including Ethiopia, on TVET related areas.

According to him, China has a lot of TVET experience to be shared. “Thus, we are working with Ethiopia as well as with African countries on the area.”

In Ethiopia’s context, we have been working closely with the Ministry of Labor and Skills to comprehensively improve the TVET system in Ethiopia, Mark added.

The collaboration between the two countries includes the review of TVET policies, guidelines, curriculum, teaching-training materials (TTM), and capacity building activities for TVET managers and TVET faculties staff.

“From China side, we have been gathering a lot of experience from the sector; and we have benefitted a lot from TVET in enhancing our economic development,’’ the director-general noted.

Indicating that there are 1,500 TVET institutions in China, he stated that 12 of these Chinese TVET institutions representatives will come to Ethiopia to discuss and consult with officials and experts that will help to understand the reality on the ground in Ethiopia.

The consultations and discussions will help them to design and implement the programs in collaboration with Ethiopian partners.

“We have already started the assessment in Ethiopia. So we are going to finish the assessment in November. After November, we are going to start the activities of reviewing the current documents, occupational statues, including curriculum, and so on.’’

Mark further said that Chinese collaboration with Ethiopia on TVET includes areas of industry development, infrastructures, agriculture, mines, constructions, tourism, among others.

TVET development and industry linkages are the key parts we need to pay attention to, he pointed out, adding that in this respect the collaboration program targets to cultivate technicians for the different industries.

As an example, he mentioned that a Chinese institution and an Ethiopia institution have been carrying out a joint training program. “So the trainees will get certificates from both sides and before they graduate the trainees will be sent to different industries for internship.

After graduation, they will be employed by different industries, including by many Chinese investors, who are looking for Ethiopian technicians to work with them.

Therefore, the director said that we can produce more technicians for the industry in this TVET collaboration program.
