Africa-Press – Ethiopia. A Cuban delegation led by Foreign Minister Bruno Eduardo Rodríguez Parrilla paid solemn homage today to the memory of Cuban soldiers who sacrificed their lives alongside Ethiopian forces during the 1970s.
During the 1970s, Cuban soldiers stood shoulder-to-shoulder with Ethiopian troops to defend the nation against foreign aggression.
A total of 163 Cuban soldiers lost their lives in that shared struggle, a sacrifice that has forever cemented the deep historical ties between Ethiopia and Cuba.
Speaking at the ceremony, which took place at the Ethio-Cuba Friendship Park — a site that stands as a testament to the enduring bond between the two nations, Foreign Minister Rodríguez Parrilla said the relationship between the two nations is cemented by blood, reflecting on the shared sacrifices that have forged an unbreakable bond.
The minister arrived in Addis Ababa in the morning for an official working visit, marking another chapter in the long-standing diplomatic relations between Ethiopia and Cuba.
Ethiopia and Cuba established diplomatic relation in 1975, following the Ethiopian Revolution. This visit is part of ongoing efforts to further strengthen the bilateral ties that have flourished over the decades.
Following the memorial ceremony, the Cuban Foreign Minister visited the National Palace Museum, where he reflected on the historical and cultural connections between the two nations.
“This is not my first visit to Ethiopia,” he remarked, noting that his participation in several events over the years that have deepened the mutual understanding and cooperation between the two countries.
At the National Palace Museum, Parrilla stated that Ethio-Cuba relations is in excellent shape, built on a solid historical foundation.
Yet, “we have the opportunity to extend our mutual cooperation across various sectors, including trade, investment, science, academia, and culture,” the minister added.
He emphasized the shared historical roots and traditions that bind the two nations, as well as their tradition of mutual support.
The countries “face common challenges and goals in an increasingly complex international landscape. Fortunately, we share common ground on several international agendas, which further strengthens our partnership.”
According to him, “there is a tremendous opportunity to enhance our already excellent bilateral relationship. By leveraging our comparative advantages, we can unlock significant potential for mutual development and prosperity.”
The visit of the Cuban delegation underscores the enduring friendship between Ethiopia and Cuba, a relationship rooted in shared struggles, mutual respect, and a commitment to a brighter future.
The ceremony, which took place at the Ethio-Cuba Friendship Park — a site that stands as a testament to the enduring bond between the two nations, was attended by members of the Cuban community residing in Ethiopia, former Ethiopian students in Cuba.
Also present were Ethiopian officials, including European and American Affairs Deputy Director-General Abraham Mengistu, and Director-General of Protocol Affairs Aziza Geleta.
