Diligent Journalists Uphold National Interest: PM Abiy

Africa-Press – Ethiopia. Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed emphasized that a diligent journalist is one who sees beyond the information presented, upholds the national interest, and refrains from rushing to criticize.

During a discussion with professionals from both public and private media organizations, the Prime Minister responded to various questions and concerns raised by the participants.

He noted that truth exists in two forms, absolute and relative, and explained that the media should function within the realm of relative truth, guided by the national interest.

Acknowledging the complexities of the post-truth and digital era, the Prime Minister pointed out that this is a time when anyone with a phone can freely express opinions, regardless of accuracy.

In such an environment, he said, the media must play a mediating role and help awaken societal awareness.

According to the Prime Minister, people often overlook the good and as those who write and speak to the public, we must recognize that we are shaping not only today’s generation but also the future.

A work based on conspiracy has no foundation and will not endure, he said, urging media professionals to rely on their education and experience, and to approach their work with responsibility and integrity.

Reiterating his message, the Prime Minister said that a diligent journalist is one who critically examines information, prioritizes the nation’s well-being, and avoids hasty judgments. Conversely, he noted, “A lazy journalist jumps to conclusions and is quick to blame and criticize.”

Prime Minister Abiy also cautioned that journalism, if not handled responsibly, can cause harm: “Journalism can bring disaster if it fails to look beyond what is merely said or heard.” “Criticize, ask, but do not lie,” he concluded.
