Africa-Press – Ethiopia. The Coordination Office for the Construction of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam has announced a public contribution of 1.7 billion Birr towards the construction of the dam during the just concluded 2017 Ethiopian Fiscal Year.
Coordination Office Deputy Executive Officer, Fikirte Teamir, briefed journalists today about the public’s extensive support, cooperation, and assistance for the dam’s construction throughout the 2017 fiscal year.
This remarkable commitment underscores the project’s distinctive foundation built on the collective efforts of both the government and citizens.
According to Fikirte, the GERD embodies a vision of shared growth for all communities within the Nile Basin.
She elaborated that the project is a monumental, cross-generational triumph, achieved through the unified dedication of all Ethiopians.
The efforts span moral backing, financial contributions, labor, public diplomacy, and environmental protection initiatives.
The Deputy Executive Officer further stated that the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam is poised to extend its benefits beyond Ethiopia’s borders, providing electric power to neighboring countries in the region.
The funds were amassed from various channels, including bond sales, direct donations, contributions from the diaspora community, and collections via the 8100 mobile short message service.
Fikirte reported that the actual collection for the dam’s construction in the fiscal year reached 1.7 billion Birr, surpassing the initial target of 1.6 billion Birr by 7 percent.
She additionally pointed out that the public’s support in the last fiscal year demonstrated a 21 percent increase compared to the same period in the previous year.
