Africa-Press – Ethiopia. Ethiopia remains committed to working hand-in-hand with partners to expand access of affordable housing, strengthening urban resilience and uplift the most vulnerable groups, according to the Ministry of Urban and Infrastructure.
A high-level Panel Discussion organized by Habitat for Humanity Ethiopia in collaboration with Habitat for Humanity Africa Area Office on Housing in Ethiopia and across Africa held today in Addis Ababa.
The panel discussion was held with the aim to facilitate dialogue among stakeholders; share best practices, and co-create actionable strategies to advance inclusive housing in Ethiopia and across Africa.
The panel discussion also anticipated to help explore scalable, inclusive, and sustainable housing solutions to address Africa’s growing urban challenges.
Addressing the high-level panel, State Minister at the Ministry Hellen Debebe said housing is more than a shelter; it is a foundation for dignity, security and economic opportunity, noting that it is central to the nation’s development priorities.
“We remain committed to working hand-in-hand with partners to expand access of affordable housing, strengthening urban resilience and uplift the most vulnerable groups.”
In this regard, the government of Ethiopia is working on different housing provision mechanisms to alleviate the housing programs, she affirmed.
Habitat for Humanity International CEO Jonathan Reckford for his part emphasized the need for shifting from shelter to system to advance inclusive and sustainable housing solutions across Africa.
Reckford underscored that moving from shelter to system is crucial to ensure inclusive and sustainable housing solutions in Africa.
For CEO, building climate resilient environment is also instrumental to realize safe and healthy housing for the community.
Similarly, Chairperson of AU-STC No.8 on Housing and Urbanization Judith Nabakooba said the need for working on affordable housing, targeted capacity building, increased coordination, and sharing experiences.
She also emphasized the significance of taking concrete actions to alleviate the growing housing challenges particularly in urban areas.
Ensuring inclusive, sustainable housing is one of the priorities of the AU under agenda 2063, she further stated.
Under its agenda 2063, the AU recognizes adequate housing as a cornerstone of inclusive development, urban resilience and social equity with the aims to address the continent’s housing deficit and promote sustainable urbanization, it was indicated.
