Africa-Press – Ethiopia. Deputy Prime Minister Temesgen Tiruneh has launched today the construction of a 144-kilometer Mieso-Dire Dawa Expressway which will be carried out with an outlay of 62.6 billion birr obtained from the World Bank.
Speaking at the launch ceremony, the Deputy Prime Minister stated that for a developing country like Ethiopia, investing in road infrastructure is critical to fostering economic growth and improving citizens’ quality of life.
He added that the Mieso-Dire Dawa Expressway demonstrates the government’s commitment to modernizing transportation and is a crucial piece of infrastructure that shows the vision of building a prosperous Ethiopia is becoming a reality.
Temesgen stated that the new expressway, which is scheduled for completion in four years, will connect two regions and the city of Dire Dawa, is expected to greatly improve economic and social interactions.
The road is also expected to create major market opportunities for domestic products and play a significant role in achieving regional free-trade goals.
Mentioning that the eastern corridor is the main trade route for Ethiopia’s imports and exports, he noted that the expressway will save time and money for movements from the port to the central part of the country.
He also said the interaction between the expressway and the railway line will provide a streamlined transportation option, which will increase market competitiveness.
The Deputy Prime Minister urged all stakeholders to efficiently carry out their responsibilities to ensure that this massive economic network, the Mieso-Dire Dawa Expressway, is completed on schedule and to the planned standards.
He emphasized that during the era of Prosperity, it’s not acceptable to start a project and abandon it, or to complete and inaugurate it with subpar quality.
Temesgen also affirmed that the government will provide continuous support and oversight to ensure the success of the Mieso-Dire Dawa Expressway project.
The Deputy Prime Minister said that in the coming years, we will build many more history-making projects that will usher in Ethiopia’s revival, and we will complete those we have started with speed and quality.
Also in attendance at the launching ceremony were Adem Farah, Deputy President of the Prosperity Party and Head of the Center for Coordination of Democracy Building with the rank of Deputy Prime Minister, and other high-level officials from the federal and regional governments.
