Africa-Press – Ethiopia. Ethiopia’s national grid is poised for a major boost with the Koysha Hydroelectric Project, according to Office of the Prime Minister.

The Koisha power plant, which has a generating capacity of 1,800 MW, will make a significant difference in Ethiopia’s national electricity grid.

It is worth recalling that Ethiopia has recently inaugurated the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), marking a significant milestone in boosting the nation’s power supply.

The nearly completed Koysha Hydroelectric Project (KHP) is also expected to further enhance Ethiopia’s energy sovereignty and advance its ambition to power and integrate the East African region

The project will generate an estimated 6,344 GWh of electricity annually, contributing substantially to Ethiopia’s growing energy demand, the office stated in a social media post.

Beyond its capacity expansion, the project supports Ethiopia’s effort towards providing clean, reliable, and affordable renewable energy.

The office added that the project plays a pivotal role in advancing the nation’s ambition to become a regional electricity export hub in East Africa, strengthening cross-border energy cooperation and economic integration.

At the local level, the project will enhance electricity access for households and small enterprises, complementing the government’s ongoing rural electrification initiatives.

This development is anticipated to stimulate socio-economic growth, improve living standards, and promote sustainable development across the surrounding communities.

The Koysha Hydroelectric Project is located approximately 129 km downstream of the Gibe III Hydropower Project along the Omo River, near Koysha Village in the South West Regional State of Ethiopia.
