Africa-Press – Ethiopia. Several entities from the fishing sector met today in Mindelo to validate the cross-border fish trade report, which could open doors to the African market and allow Cape Verdean companies to compete in the export market.
The assessment was made to the press by the Director-General of Fisheries and Aquaculture, Carlos Monteiro, referring to the pilot experience, in which Cape Verde, along with Comoros, was chosen for its implementation.
It is a program that, according to the same source, aims to optimize and, above all, allow small and medium-sized enterprises to access the market and financing.
The workshop, explained Carlos Monteiro, intends to address standardization issues and, mainly, analyze technical aspects of transport to allow African countries, such as Cape Verde, to access new markets and diversify their own economy.
“Because Africa as a whole is a continent with great potential and abundant raw materials, it has excellent conditions in terms of fishing, namely resources and availability. It is a great opportunity, and Cape Verde will naturally take advantage of this synergy,” the official asserted.
He explained that the beneficiaries are expected to be small and medium-sized enterprises, prioritizing gender equality, that is, women leading activities in the sector.
Presiding over the event, the Minister of the Sea, Jorge Santos, told the press that the validation of this report represents “an important moment” because it will allow for reflection on cross-border fish trade and also the enhancement of the entire value chain.
“Cape Verde made a very wise choice in terms of economic development, prioritizing and giving centrality to the blue economy,” the official considered.
He believes that in the blue economy, the marketing of fish plays a central role, not only because it is a primary activity, but also because it adds value to the entire sector chain. Jorge Santos believes that this goal can be achieved, both in terms of fishmongers and fishermen, as well as related companies, including those in the aquaculture sector, such as Nortuna and Fazenda do Camarão, both in São Vicente.
