Africa-Press – Ethiopia. April 21/2021(ENA) Ethiopia on Tuesday launched a two-year ‘HaSET’ research project to improve child and maternal health across the country.
The project is being implemented by the Ethiopian Institute of Public Health (EPHI) and Saint Paul’s Hospital Millennium Medical College in collaboration with Harvard University T.H. Chan School of Public Health.
It was launched in the presence of Health State Minister Dr. Dereje Dugma, EPHI Director-General Dr. Ebba Abate, academicians and experts.
The project, funded by the Bill and Melinda Gate Foundation, will be conducted by 10 Ethiopian scholars who have done research in the field.
The project is primarily aimed at improving maternal and child health by introducing the culture of evidence-based policy formulation and clinical practice, it was learned.
During the launching ceremony, EPHI Director-General Dr. Ebba Abate said HaSET Maternal and Child Health Research Project aligned with the domestic plan and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) particularly target 3.
The project will help to provide scientific research on government-run health improvement programs across the country.
EPHI is conducting the project by mobilizing national capacity and in collaboration with international partners, he added.
Ethiopia has reduced maternal and child mortality by half since 2000. But a maternal mortality rate of 412 per 100,000 live births and child mortality rate of 67 per 1,000 are still persisted.
