Africa-Press – Ethiopia. The Ethiopian Diaspora Service announced that policy amendments are being made to make the diaspora benefit from the economic development of Ethiopia.

Diaspora Service General-Director Fitsum Arega told ENA that the existing diaspora policy has been in place for the last thirteen years.

In those years, many change have taken place in economic, social and political sectors as a result of various reforms in the country, he added.

In particular, various reforms have been made over the past seven years to build an economy that benefits Ethiopians and other actors, the Director-General elaborated.

Thus, gaps have been identified in the policy through a study conducted in collaboration with higher education institutions.

Similarly, the recently implemented Homegrown Economic Program II necessitates the need for amendment.

The Ethiopian capital market also allows the diaspora to invest their money in the sector they want, regardless of where they are; and the amended policy is designed accordingly, the Director-General said.

As Ethiopia is one of the fastest growing African countries and investment at this moment is viable, he called on Ethiopians residing abroad and foreigners of Ethiopian origin to take advantage of the opportunity to increase their investment participation.

In this regard, he underscored that the Ethiopian Diaspora Service is working diligently to ensure that the diaspora benefits the country and themselves through economic diplomacy.
